Felix Rey Toys & Trinkets Diaper Bag

No, I don’t have an announcement to make. A diaper bag to me is like a hairbrush to Serena van der Woodsen. We both likely will never own one. But while browsing ShopBop’s new bags, I spotted (no pun intended- get it? Because it has spots!?!) this bag and my eyes were immediately drawn to it. Aside from the fact that it’s gold and I’m obsessed with gold, the bag has two outer pockets at the front with “toys” and “trinkets” embroidered on them. Adorable. All mommies have different diaper bags styles. I am going to assume Victoria Beckham will simply use one of her many Hermès bags, but most moms probably would take a different route. Might I suggest the gold cheetah route? This Felix Roy bag has plenty of pockets and necessities that a mom requires in a diaper bag. At least, to me it looks like it does, because I wouldn’t know what one would need. But it’s cute, glam and any mom would be chic carrying it.Available at shopbop for $395

Burberry Prorsum Men’s Fall 2011

Christopher Bailey once again turned out a sturdy, solid and stylish collection of men’s Prorsum bags for fall. More geared toward oversized pieces that leant themselves for travel, the duffels and totes bore minimal hardware and lots of texture. Naturally, I gravitated toward the ombré croc tote. But how could you not? It looked incredible! Big and roomy, it features an ample flap over top weighted down with a bar to keep one’s contents safe–not to mention maintain the bag’s structure. I also like that it’s relatively flat, but wide and tall enough for newspapers and magazines to lie flat. While most of the bags are geared toward travel, the whimsical colored totes will appeal to students and young professionals alike. They’re lightweight, come with detachable shoulder straps and have reinforced leather bottoms to retain somewhat of a shape. They’ll no doubt help Burberry continue its boom in Asia, where third-quarter 2010 revenues were up 26.3 percent “partly due” to the demand for men’s satchels.

Roger Vivier Metro Bag

If you are looking for a beautifully tailored bag that will take you anywhere, Roger Vivier‘s Metro bag is it! Clean lines with chic modern details, a Vivier bag transcends time and fashion trends. Whether it be 1960 or 2011, Vivier bags always look current and relevant. There are several sizes in the Metro and since I’m all about the cross body bag right now (I just love having my hands free while shopping, traveling or doing my daily errands)– I’m dying for this little gray python number (Micro Metro $1,725)! The new shoulder style Metro “Lacy” bag is great, too. Think of it as a contemporary alternative to the classic Chanel bag– sophisticated without any pretensions, it’s a bag that you will not tire of! For spring, the Metro it comes in three colors– the brown colored, a dark chocolate and a burnt orange ($2,395). I love that Bruno Frisoni has stayed true to Vivier’s vision while adding his own edgy flair (I hung out with him in Taipei a couple of years ago and he is one of the most fun and charismatic people you’ll ever meet!). And I mean it, my next bag purchase will be that Micro Mini! What about you? How do you feel about Roger Vivier bags?Roger Vivier online.

By Malene Birger Hauda Metal Armouring: What’s in Your Wallet

I’m intrigued by this. Would I wear this bag? Not unless I was headed to a fencing party wearing my armored dress and matching hat, but I think that would be overdoing it.I’m not saying By Malene Birger Hauda metal armouring bag isn’t creative, because hey, I am all into different textures and materials, it’s that I don’t want everyone seeing what’s in my bag. It’s like shouting, “Hey! Tonight I’m carrying my Visa, red MAC lipstick, $80 and a tampon! See?!”Now unless I’m carrying a weapon into a dangerous part of town so people know not to mess with me, I don’t want people to see what’s in my goody bag. That’s sacred territory. I’ve known this since I was 5 and was caught red handed pawing through my mom’s purse chewing entire packs of gum up and playing with her credit cards. She explained to me that a woman’s purse is like her underwear drawer and you don’t just go rummaging through it without asking. She also then told me I would be getting a bull cut because I had a wad of Big Red in my hair. I learned very valuable lessons that day; don’t climb into peoples purses without asking and if your wad of 10 pieces of gum falls out of your mouth and you can’t find it stay perfectly still and scream for help.Paws (and eyes) off the bag, please. I’m just not feeling this one. Plus the brown leather with the metal is just weird. If anything it should be black, but I don’t see anything saving this little spy guy. What do you guys think?Shopbop for $170

3.1 Phillip Lim Seymour Zipper Leather Tote

I have always felt a disconnect between Michael Kor’s sleek sporty ready to wear and his bags. Yes, different design teams but hello, call a meeting!! Apparently, they have because this clean and pure structured shoulder bag/clutch is what I have been waiting for. The little tab and the silver push lock closure is all is needed for a sophisticated feel that can be worn with his goddess like draped dresses. And sporty enough for the lounge-y maxi dress with tee shirt and belt (I’m insanely in love with that look!!). Remove the strap and you have a clutch that is wonderfully refreshing for your entire summer wardrobe. Michael Kors is one of my favorite shows of the week, I am hoping and praying we see more bags in this vein. Get it at Saks Fifth Avenue for a Frugal Snob buy of $395.

I know this kinda sorta looks like Anya Hindmarch but the details make it so much edgier. That little pocket is so cute but the distressed hardware is what gives the bag that slight edge. A tall tote is great for laptops and magazines but you can’t find the small things, so that pocket is essential to making this bag usable (there are also 2 interior pockets). The zippers are mostly for aesthetics rather than function but it breaks up the mass of the bag so it isn’t one big blah. I love the way the straps go partial way down and how all the elements are staggered in perfect proportion from each other. I’m way over analyzing but your eyes are trained to find balance and when looking at this bag, they are happy! At Saks Fifth Avenue for $725.

Jil Sander Madame Frame Top Handle Bag

The 60′s aesthetics is my favorite trend of all time. Not only for the sleek and chic look but because women back then had real bodies, now all I need is a torpedo cone bra and this bag. Every time I say I hate something (conspicuous luggage tags) someone goes and proves me wrong. The simple frame shape is absolutely enhanced with the tag, hanging from the middle no less. If you describe this without an image, no one would believe you when you use the word “amazing”. The top handle is the best way to show a bag but obviously is not the most convenient – this comes with a shoulder strap for those times when you need an extra hand or two. At Saks Fifth Avenue for $1375.

Lanvin Sweet Dora Patent Crossbody Bag

Sweet Lordy Lord, this bag has the wrong name cuz Dora to me does not sound as refined and sophisticated as this bag insists (yes, it is due to the explorer by the same name). The subtle color blocking, the clean engineering and HOLY WOW, that tortoise-like clasp with gold hardware is blowing my insane little mind – it is the perfect icing on the cake. The straps are adjustable for crossbody or shoulder and unlike most crossbodies, this one actually looks great as a shoulder due to the east/west shape. You can go from quiet ladylike cool to raging party goer with a simple sling of the strap. I love the new direction Alber Elbaz is taking us!! At Neiman Marcus for $1747.

Givenchy Black Tote with Red Straps

Is this bag simple? Yes. Is even the name a little un-creative? Indeed. Do I think it’s as cute as a puppy in a duck costume? Yes, yes I do. The Givenchy Black Tote is as functional as it is fantastic. The red straps totally make this worth selling some old jewelry your ex gave you that is sitting in the bottom of your jewelry box in a knot right now looking ugly and full of secrets. This black tote also comes with a longer black strap making this a perfect accessory to carry on a trip. It’s sizeable enough to fit wallet, phone, snacks and that copy of Sports Illustrated, Swimsuit edition that you buy every year to torture yourself and sit on the plane and study the bodies of these creatures to finally decide airbrushing has really gotten out of hand and you feel sorry for these girls being in the magazine in the first place. Then proceed to throw back a Yoo-Hoo and snacks and feel good about the fact that you are a real woman, not a swimsuit alien from a Brazilian different planet to be gawked over.Functional and cute, this would be an easy wear to throw something on and grab. It’s casual but classy and I would certainly get a lot of miles out of it. But you will pay for those miles. This red handled beauty is $1,660

Prada “Cinghiale:” A Verdant Bag Just in Time for Spring

I can’t stress it enough: color-blocking is taking over our accessories this spring, and the Prada “Cinghiale” bag nails it. The vivid Kelly green is amazing (it reminds me of freshly cut grass – how spring is that?), especially with the silver peeking out beneath the front flap. I do like the new covered closure (which is on most of the Spring Summer bags), it is actually faux – a magnetic snap is hidden underneath. While it is kind of on the small side (5″H by 9″W by 1″D), this is a great cross-body bag that can be adjusted to a shoulder length. The straps also totally detach turning it into a clutch, it’s a bit thick and the loop hardware shows but it’s acceptable. Convertible and eye-catching: I’ll take it. At Neiman Marcus for $1,470.Wear it with the Vivian Westwood Anglomania’s Dione striped jersey dress in navy and white stripes, it doesn’t compete with the bag, thanks to its classical simplicity, but is equally crisp and attention-grabbing. At Net-a-Porter for $290.

Frugal Snob: Tory Burch “Louisa” Messenger Bag

I have been so pleased to see Ms. Burch elevate her designs so far past the logo-adorned ballet flats of five years ago. The trademark ethnic-inspired “T” hardware remains, but this simple bag’s embellished shoulder straps are on-trend in a major way. The usage of buckle hardware (clean and subtle) all along the straps is inventive and graphic. Multi-functional, you can carry it as a clutch, shoulder bag, or messenger. However you hold it, make sure you show off the strap to flaunt the added punch. On Net-a-Porter for $395.Pair with: Ashley Pitman’s Studded Light Horn Bangle has well-matched amounts of gold accents and earthiness. At Bergdorf Goodman for $395.

DKNY Fall 2011 Runway Bags: Color Me Mod

The DKNY girl is on top of the trends, and for this collection, edgier than the brand’s shows of late and appropriately nicknamed “New York Mods,” she proved she’s even ahead of the curve. For fall, this savvy shopper is all about color. Pinks and reds clashed in a most agreeable manner and were accompanied by multihued bags (one in black, blue, and tomato stood out). Whether it is a neon sweater with contrasting clutch or a pair of bold red pants with a complimentary color-blocked clutch, she is ready and willing to go for it.Bags, small and compact, were accessorized with large tassel charms – bestowing a dose of attitude – and convenient bands for hand support. Glossy, dark blue fingernails matched the navy-centric clutches, while fresh white manicures offset the brights and blacks. This new mod knows how to incorporate the latest runway looks into her everyday wardrobe, without breaking the bank and with stylish nails to match. Can’t wait for fall? Check out current season goodies m now. We are collaborating with DKNY on an exciting project to be announced soon. Stay tuned!

Tod’s Dots Shopping Medium Tote: The Tod’s Advantage

I’ll be the first to admit this is simple and borderline boring, but I’m going to make a strong case for it. A simple tote is unapologetically elegant. Think of the iconic Chanel tote. Unlike many designers, Tod’s is known for endurance and simplicity, bags of quality that can be used forever with minimal styles to match. They have retired the “Lady D” tote that literally everyone and their mothers had (yes, mine too!) and this will replace it as their signature tote bag. I love this shape, especially in soothing gray, that allows for easy access to the inside, and the fact that it fits easily under the arm without being bulky. So sparse, so concise in it’s design, you know this tote must be the utmost of caliber. When a bag makes it look this easy, there’s no doubt that boundless workmanship and skill was involved. And that there are boundless possibilities when carrying it. At Saks Fifth Avenue for $1, 250.Pair with: I’m not saying everything has to be plain and gray! Knock ‘em dead with pretty ombré-patterned Mary Jane pumps by Nicholas Kirkwood, with loads of depth and color to spare. On Luisa Via Roma for $978.

Badgley Mischka Platinum Label Annette Small Chain Strap Hobo

Well it must be getting warmer because I am all about pastel colors and pretty little bags and this is right up that ally. Mixing a soft baby pink color with supple leather and an edgy punk chain handle is a great way to get the best of both femininity and flare.I would wear this to something like a happy hour with friends or on a night out where I need a bit more room than a clutch might offer. This color with the chain detail would be the perfect addition to an outfit I am determined to wear this coming season… the pants jumpsuit. Yes, I am setting my sights on a little black number (that I’m sure my friends will make fun of me for wearing while secretly plotting to steal it as soon as it’s removed from my body). With this bag, that suit, and some nude pumps, I will be ready to paint the town. Not ready for the pants? Pair the pink panther with a shorts version. At Saks Fifth Avenue for $375

Jana Feifer Two Toned Leather Totes: Spring time and the toting’s easy

These delightful totes from Jana Feifer will help you glide into the new season in trendy color-block style. They come in a variety of shades and would be the perfect accessory to grab when going to the beach, heading to the grocery store, or going on a shopping date with that one friend you have who always complains that she’s hungry, or she needs a tissue, or her feet hurt so she needs to change shoes. This sizeable tote will fit everything you need in it while keeping a cheery presence on your arm. Durable, practical, but much cuter than those re-usable shopping bags or (gasp) that plastic bag you stuff your sunscreen in before you head to the pool (we’ve all done it, but for goodness sake, make it stop), this bag is your answer to your spring/summer easy toting, no nonsense needs.Elyse Walker for $550

Bally Vanessa Canvas And Shark-Effect Leather Bucket Bag

I’m just as shocked as you are, but this is another bucket bag for spring that I just love. The off-white canvas with blue shark-effect leather is playful and fun and makes me want to pack my SPF 30, throw some braids in my hair, jump into a romper and go find myself a boat to play on.This sporty/chic bag will be the perfect grab and go during the warm summer months to take to your kid’s summer soccer game, (in the brutal heat- gross) or to a casual dinner by the water on a sleepy Sunday. The perky blue is as bright as a summery day and the simple shape is functional but not too big to look “backpack-ish” like some bucket bags can. I also enjoy the black hardware, it’s an interesting choice but totally brings a polished look to a casual piece

Lanvin “Dear Danae” Convertible Washed-Leather and Python Bag: Double Take

Lanvin, you had me fooled. Looks like I complained too soon about the “Dear Danae.” This one’s got all the features I crave and love. An impeccable shoulder bag with a pinch of intrigue, via the offset zippered pocket, plus a zip compartment under the flap (great for easy access to key essentials).I haven’t met too many bags that like to travel in pairs, but this one has a python Siamese twin – actually a clutch with an expandable gusset when detached, but a bit like an odd growth when latched onto the bag. Now I’m not sure why you’d ever need to have a clutch on your shoulder bag with you. And what happens to the rest of your bag when you set your clutch free for evening adventures, if you dontnhave your car as storage? I suppose if you have a really busy day with loads to carry, you always have the option of using both (treat the clutch like a makeup case and keep your items separate). To resolve the mystery, I would regard this as a two-for-one deal. Although some might argue that at this price, it should come with a third diamond-encrusted pouch. But, hey, there’s python! If you ask me, a good skin can sometimes trump bling – clearly, I’m a bag person. On Net-a-Porter for $2,520.Pair with: Let’s not be silly: I love my jewelry. Like Mallarino’s 24-karat ring, in a leafy floral design that’s generous on your finger. Mallarino “Paloma” 24-Karat Gold-Vermeil Ring, $275.

Elie Tahari “Maggie” Clutch: Proves Nude’s Not Lewd

A crisp little clutch that’s the color of a sandy beach: fab for vacationing or second best, just pretending to be on vacation locally. Sometimes you want a bag without a hint of vulgarity or drama. While this Elie Tahari bag is seductively nude, it’s as pure and clean as they come. I love how it’s not junked up with hardware – just bare bones leather-trimmed raffia with a simple tab closure. Feel free to accessorize to your heart’s content and add some weight to your look via heavy metal rings and bracelets. Concise and subdued, it’s just the thing for jeweled hands to carry on ladies lunch dates and summer night dates. Just change your garb accordingly and the bag will follow suit. On ShopBop for $348.Pair with: An ornate statement necklace brings the drama, and the sand-and-sea palette of fossilized agate and azure stones is in keeping with your naturalistic motif. Judy Geib “Charm of the Unexpected” Necklace, $9,200.

Antik Batik Enzo Studded Leather Shoulder Bag: My Summer Grab Bag

We all are aware that crossbody bags will be clutch come summer, but which one to choose? I am currently in the market for a crossbody large enough that I can bring it to work on the days I plan on playing afterwards, but is also something I can mix with many outfits, so when I am wearing a skirt and a fitted top, it doesn’t look too casual, and when I’m in a laid back summer dress, it doesn’t look too formal. I think the Antik Batik Enzo studded leather shoulder bag may be my answer for my summer needs. It is a perfect mix of laid back style and rock worthy edge. Black leather will go with almost anything, and the studs give it a pop that will keep people guessing as to whether or not I’m actually Rihanna, and just look reallyyyy different in real life. I could wear this with a fitted black dress to work and with cutoffs and a tank on the weekends. The double-chain and snake-effect leather shoulder strap adds sexiness to this little guy, and anyone who knows me is aware that I love a good tassel. It is a ziptop closure, which is something I require on almost all of my everyday bags.Another plus to this purchase is that even on my revised “Emma is going to save lots O money so one day she can buy a castle in the South of France” budget, I wouldn’t feel too guilty about scooping this up.$585 at Net-a-Porter

Roberto Cavalli Doctor Fringed Distressed-Suede Bag: Handbag of Horrors

What on earth are you going to do with this? Unless you’re a mummy, you’re going to look ridiculous. It’s like an abandoned house where the chandeliers collect so much dust and spider webs that the debris starts to dangle down in a most foreboding way. (I went to a bar like that in New York – McSorley’s Old Ale House. It’s the oldest bar in the city and you can tell because they’ve NEVER cleaned anything in there.) This bag looks so dusty and dingy, I want to shake all the junk off of it. Even the shoulder strap has fringe, so you look like you’re sporting some sort of sad, mop-like cape when you carry it. The gray hue looks more like a filthy white, so it just adds to the macabre effect of this ghostly, ghastly creation. If this bag hasn’t scared you yet (maybe you’ve got a major thing for both haunted houses and fringe) just take a gander at the price: $3,785. Time to run away screaming! On Net-a-Porter for $3,785.

Bottega Veneta Grey Striped Messenger Bag: Laid Back Luxury

I’m a huge fan of this relaxed, easy, breezy bag. The Bottega Veneta grey striped messenger is effortlessly chic with soft grey suede in a laid back slouch. The stripes bring a summertime feel to it and will allow you to dress it down with a bright yellow romper and some flats or play it up with some skinnies, red pumps and white button down. Bags like these give off the vibe that you obviously have great taste, but don’t always need a bag to jump off your arm and slap someone with its style, shape or color. Simple yet classy, this bag will take you into summer with swagger.Elyse Walker for $1,950

That’s right: the Little Red Bag. Sometimes

That’s right: the Little Red Bag. Sometimes, the bag justifies the night. There are some wardrobe acquisitions that give you reason enough to get your girls together and plan an evening out on the town, braving the Saturday crowds and all. This petite-chic VBH shoulder bag (a diminutive 6″ wide) is adorable to tote on an evening out. Polished hardware dresses it up even more and a both adjustable and convertible strap means you can tailor your satchel to your dance moves; make it a crossbody when you really want to get down. The new disco bag motivates you to pack light – all you require are a credit card, some cash, and your cell. So make sure your makeup is impeccable and hit the road! With impeccable stitching and leatherwork, clean lines, and a sleek shape, it’s a small sacrifice to make to the handbag gods. $1,495 at FortyFiveTen- call 214-559-4510 to order!Pair with: Nothing goes with a little red bag like massive white heels – Alexander McQueen‘s in python and gold studs will put you in the spotlight all night long. Your friends might be so jealous they’ll wish they just stayed home! Alexander McQueen Cut-Out Python Booties, $2,150.

Bottega Veneta “Nero” Crocodile Soft Clutch: Clutch It If You Can

This is the clutch to retire all other clutches. Where to begin? The texture, the shape, the functionality, the versatility or the total outcome of overwhelming elegance? Clutches are usually way too dainty for me; I’m always in search of one I can wear without a ball gown (I actually don’t own any clutches that could be paired with a ball gown. Or a ball gown, for that matter!) This “murse” (man purse) shape and appeal – strong lines and no fuss – is sexy and cool, but a super-flat silhouette means no old-school machismo here.I don’t need to tell you that crocodile is an exquisite skin, but the effect of woven croc makes “high-level luxe” sound like an understatement. And it’s as functional as a clutch can be – that woven panel is a pocket, the ultra-long zipper pull doubles as a wristlet, and there is an additional pocket on the flap’s underside. There is actually nothing wrong with Bottega Veneta‘s bag. Except, perhaps, the price. Yes, it’s a million dollars, but can you fathom ever falling out of love with such a treasure. At Bottega Veneta for $8,300.Pair with: If you haven’t cut up your credit cards after your well-worth-it purchase, spring for a menswear-inspired blazer. The relaxed fit and feminine sheen of Theyskens’ Theory‘s midnight-blue satin jacket is boy-meets-girl perfection. On Net-a-Porter for $660.

Alexander Wang Angela Pochette

Let me get my only annoyance about this bag out of way: why is this, and what I presume most, Alexander Wang bag made in China? For $650, and coming from a designer as prolific and fashion-forward as Alex, I must say I was shocked that this pochette carried such a tag. I know China’s the next frontier for luxury–but I think they meant in terms of consumers and not necessarily luxury manufacturing. Country of origin aside, I think this pochette–named after Angela Lindvall, perhaps?–is the quintessential cool girl’s bag. If the mom has the Hermès Kelly clutch, then this is her daughter’s equally cool going-out bag. Alex’s bags have been tremendously successful–not just because they’re relatively affordable (now we know why), but because they’re a great balance of edgy and utility. While this Angela silhouette is not a new shape, it does return for pre-spring in some great new colors, including smoke, sage and patent brick. Available in both patent (as seen here) and classic pebble leather finishes, it’s adjustable short strap makes it perfect for nights out. The trademark stud details add the needed oomph while the necessary zippers remain hidden. Just how I like.$670, available

Trussardi 1911 Red Camo Leather Duffle Bag

Despite its high prices, I’ve long admired the leathergoods offerings from Trussardi 1911. Milan Vukmirovkic, the Italian label’s multi-talented creative director, has just launched a “Red Camo by Trussardi 1911″ collection available exclusively at the boutique e-shop. At first glance, all the pieces are extremely practical and masculine–but it’s the leather travel bag in the signature camouflage print that I was most drawn to. For a new twist, Vukmirovkic added bright red contrast details in vibrant red leather for what can only be described as a striking visual effect. The overall collection is comprised of 13 accessories: wallets, toiletry case, shoulder bag, gym bag and trolley. There are even covers for the Blackberry, iPhone, iPad and iPod. For those wanting a more rugged feel, opt for the duffle with fabric handles that can double as a gym bag (it runs $1,690).$2,000, available exclusively

Nancy Gonzalez Launches Travel Collection

Dear Santa (or more realistically, husband Rich), this is what I want for Christmas!! I am pretty schleppy when I get on a plane, I want to be comfortable so I wear the closest thing to pajamas that is not pajamas. I need something to pull it all together, like a trolley in crocodile, preferably the carry on size in gorgeous teal. I must be specific because Santa and my husband both seem to need a lot of direction when it comes to gifting. Of course, I would always prefer the larger of anything but I really can’t allow an entire crocodile suitcase to be checked in. And I don’t like bringing a giant trolley aboard as a carry on. The prices might seem extreme at first, but if you measure out the amount of skin used for this compared to a bag, you are getting a real bargain!! The travel is a whole new collection for Nancy Gonzalez and also includes hat boxes, iPad cases, passport holders and other accessories, 11 pieces in all. They are currently exclusive to Bergdorf Goodman. The Crocodile and Pony Trolley is $6125, Crocodile Trolley is $7500 and Crocodile Carry On Trolley is $6500.

Snob Worthy Links December 28, 2010

I love this bag but probably because it is a mix of the Kelly and the PS11. Usually the combination knockoff is a turnoff but this is a perfect and ingenious mash-up. It’s little bit ladylike and a whole lotta vavoom which makes for a killer bag that can live through countless trends. It may look specific but it is actually pretty versatile – the office for sure but also with jeans, a rocked out look and structured dress. Not sure I would take this out at night though. The cool hardware gives you 2 positions for I don’t know what but it does make it more legitimate even if it’s essentially useless. At Barneys New York for $3650.

Vionnet Three Gusset Flap Shoulder Bag: Too Cool for School

What did you want-A bag that oozes class and is the perfect size for everyday that all your friends will “ooo” and “ahh” over? Well my friends, I give you the Vionnet Three Gusset Flap Shoulder Bag (and the crowd goes wild). This bag makes me want to put on a pair of fancy elbow length long gloves and have an electric cigarette (cause real ones are bad for you, kids) stuck in a long cigarette holder and march around in a faux fur coat looking like a boss. This bag is chic. It’s chic without trying. It is tastefully simple, and doesn’t need to shout its awesomeness. Because when you’re this cool, you don’t need to go around telling people.Being this cool will cost you however, it’s at Saks for $2,080. That’s a little too cool for my comfort, and my wallet.

Look Alike of the Week: Proenza Schouler PS1 vs Chloe Billie

Coco Chanel famously said “Imitation is the highest form of flattery” but I say “Imitation is the highest form of annoyance”! Okay, so Proenza Schouler did not invent the messenger bag but I think it’s fair to say that its PS1 tote spawned an entire generation of look alike bags when it launched to much hype a few years ago. The latest, the Chloe Billie bag, definitely has a similar feel to the PS1, especially with the mix of linen and leather. Sure there are differences, the Billie is more structured, does not have a top handle, and the flap is more traditional but you can not deny that these bags have a strong resemblance. I don’t know about you but I prefer the PS1– the black suede strap detailing gives a richness to the linen bag and it looks well thought out and designed. The Billie bag in comparison looks like a boring school bag with clumsy buckles and uninteresting details. Which is why I am shocked that it’s more expensive than the PS1! Which one do you prefer?Proenza Schouler PS1 medium linen satchel $1,485Chloe Billie leather and linen shoulder bag $1,560

Jessica Alba in Viktor & Rolf’s “Just in Case” Bag

I always knew Jessica Alba was a bag fiend. Case in point: the “Little Fockers” star was spotted over Christmas carrying Viktor & Rolf’s brand new “Just in Case” bag in black leather. I like that Jessica opts for more indie, younger brands like Viktor & Rolf, not to mention Derek Lam and Proenza Schouler. Jessica’s version is simple; the natural grain calfskin is accented with gold details–I love the sturdy metal corners that help anchor the bag–and is quite utilitarian given the longer handles and the detachable shoulder strap.$1,095 Available at Code C, 8641 West Sunset Blvd, West Hollywood, CA, 310 652 0200

Burberry Medium Canvas Shoulder Bag: Snob or Slob?

In my time working in the handbag world I learned very quickly that there is a time and a place for logos and they are to be used and displayed at only certain times. It shouldn’t be forced or too obvious. I give you the Burberry Medium Canvas Shoulder Bag. Exhibit A.I love the shape of this durable little guy. I love the pockets inside and out, and I love the strap options. However, the seal graphic stamped on the bag bothers me. I get the fact that it would be great to use as a travel piece given its size and textile, but I think, on a daily basis (as the description says you should use this bag) the stamp is a bit… tacky.I also think the $850 price tag it has is steep for a canvas bag… If it was about half that I could see myself buying this for my Europe trip I am planning in late August and would scoot around the world with it, but at that price I would not get even close to enough wear out of it to justify the purchase.Thoughts? Slob or snob? Saks Fifth Avenue for $850.

Vanessa Hudgens in Fendi Unzipped Bag

She and Zac Efron may no longer be one of Young Hollywood’s “It” couples, but Vanessa Hudgens clearly isn’t letting a little breakup ruin her style pursuits. Paparazzi recently snapped the actress running errands armed with Fendi’s new Unzipped bag. Available in brown, beige and blue, Hudgens maybe chose black to reflect her mood (or maybe because it’s the most universally flattering); regardless, it’s a great understated, roomy bag that provides the versatility of a handbag or over-the-shoulder crossbody. In addition to the top zip, a side zip provides extra storage capabilities for things you need quick access to (Blackberry, gum, car keys, the phone # to TMZ). It’s also discreet and free of any garish logos, meaning that only those in the know…know.$1,295, available at Fendi boutiques

Proenza Schouler Pre-Fall 2011

Are you waiting with bated breath for Proenza Schouler‘s Fall 2011 show on Feb 16th at 8pm? Here are a few of delectable arm candy from Pre-Fall 2011 to satiate you until then! You must know by now the love affair I’ve been having with my PS11 shoulder bag and I’ve often shared my obsession for a PS1 messenger as well. I almost took the plunge with the white python but decided it was not practical considering how much I travel and throw my bags around. I then asked Santa for the blue crocodile version but he did not respond accordingly and it was sold (#NotMeantToBe). But I did not give up– as I am a firm believer of fate when it comes to bags. I believe that a bag chooses you, if it’s meant to be yours, it will find you– whether strolling through Barneys New York or browsing the internet late night, the right bag will appear at the right time. My perfect PS1 messenger appeared to me late yesterday afternoon in the form of supple soft calfskin and luxurious pony hair. This bag is the perfect marriage of form and function, pony hair has the element of exotic that I love yet is sturdy and will withstand daily use. I will not sleep until it is mine! But that’s not all, my PS11 will also be issued in a gorgeous burnt orange along with a wristlet version in ombre stripes that is youthful and exuberant. With so many amazing new options, how is a girl to choose? Yes to all please!

Christian Louboutin Morrigan Studded Bag

The trend of putting studs on anything and everything has been around for a little while now. Christian Louboutin is a master at designing shoes, and those of the studded variety are pretty amazing. This bag, however? I’m torn. Do I like the fact that it can be used as a weapon in case of an emergency? Kind of. The shape of the bag is simple and nothing shockingly new. The leather bag has a red lining and a long cross-body strap. Aside from the studs along the edge, the only other defining thing about this bag is the silver Louboutin signature front and center, which instantly turns me off. But I guess that’s what makes this bag $995, right? If someone gave this to me to carry, I would absolutely carry it (I don’t have anything with studs on it and I wouldn’t mind), but I won’t be saving up my pennies for this bad boy.Available at Net-a-Porter

Gucci Travels Chic

Not all of us want to travel with our pillow and stuffed animals (while wearing pajamas to boot)– some of us actually want to look presentable (and by that I don’t mean you should dress like the flight crew). I do like wearing comfortable clothes when flying but you don’t have to resort to Juicy sweatsuits or PJs; a soft cashmere sweater with leggings/jeans and boots are my travel staples (along with an Hermes scarf that doubles as my blankie on flight. And of course I like to carry cute travel bags. This season, Gucci has a fabulous vanilla cream leather travel bag with tan leather top handles (cuz the handles get worn out first) and convertible canvas shoulder/body strap. Contrasting double zipper pulls make it easy to open and grab your passport or magazine– a very chic (albeit impractical color) carry on bag! All I’m missing now is an excuse to go to St. Barts. $1,690

Anya Hindmarch Rossum Woven Leather Clutch: Jackpot

We’ve been really busy and have not had time to update our press page. Here are a few fun interviews Kelly and Tina did for our blogging friends at Style Caster and Independent Fashion Bloggers.

Gold, woven, leather and glamour…need I say more? This chic shiny number by Anya Hindmarch has certainly grabbed my attention. The woven look is big this year and I adore the metallic twist this piece takes. This would look amazing with a bright coral dress and some super high wedges, or would even dress up a romper and flats.I love the free style of summer bags (as we are all feeling the ridiculous cold of this insane winter all I can seem to think of is warm weather and all that it brings). This piece almost has a bohemian feel to it with the tassel, which of course, I love. Fun, functional and fabulous, this clutch will be clutch come summer.$545 @ Net-a-Porter

Prada Made To Order “Lettering” Service: Are you cheering yet?

P-R-A-D-A, who do you appreciate?! Prada‘s new lettering service is about as close to high school as I’ll ever get again but honestly, I am not interested in a Romy & Michelle trip down nostalgia lane. But if you are a cheerleader (or wished you still are) and want your backpacks, trolleys and shopping bags customized with rainbow colored initials, this is for you! Prada’s new Made To Order “Lettering” service is exclusive on and in twelve Prada stores worldwide (18 and under only please). On another note, who else is excited that Prada is (finally!) online?!

Carlos Falchi Small Envelope Clutch: Catch of the Day

Another tempting knuckle duster clutch from McQueen– this time in the form of buttery suede and shimmering gold studs. Pale cream suede is not the most practical of skins but hopefully the tiny studs will help keep the stains at bay (you always have the option of dying the bag dark brown or black if it gets really bad as suede is easy to dye– I’m always thinking ahead!). But the best part of the clutch are the two giant cocktail rings flanked by McQueen’s iconic skulls– think of it as jewelry + bag. A nice Valentine’s pressie to yourself perhaps? Alexander McQueen Knuckle-Duster Studded Suede Box Clutch for $1,895

Picture this: The night is warm, the stars are out, and you’re getting ready for a fancy night by the water. Your dress is a pale yellow, your shoes are nude and high, and you have just a hint of a tan with some perfect coral lips and light pink shimmer on your eyes. Here is your missing piece in the “you look perfect” puzzle. The Carlos Falchi small envelope clutch is a gorgeous summer piece that immediately makes me think of the fun colors of summer wear. It’s covered in python and comes in turquoise, coral or taupe. The optional chain strap can be tucked in so you have the option of strap or no strap, and the crystals make it shimmer like a sunny day at sea. This bag had me hooked like a fish right away.Pick up this beauty at Neiman Marcus for $995

Elaine Turner April Paneled Tote: Girls Gone Woven

Going somewhere this spring hmmm? Escaping this ridiculous snow and cold for some coconut oil and palm trees? Well grab the Elaine Turner April paneled tote, and head to Margaretville. This woven leather handy-dandy tote with metallic gold leather trim is perfect for all your beach needs. It has two side pockets for your SPF and drink of choice, and the main compartment is nice and roomy for your magazine, book, or binoculars for those of you who like to people stalk watch on the beach. When you’re finished with your beach day, simple snap the April tote closed and scurry away to your hotel. This bag is handy, but not heavy, cute, and not clunky and would be the perfect spring break companion.Pick it up at Neiman Marcus for $350

You need to sit down before you read this. Ready? Ok, Donna Karan is giving away an alligator bag worth $9,800!!! Are you dying over the shiny patent finish with gunmetal hardware? A chic and sleek tote to carry you through your daily life, we all need one of these but too bad they are only giving one away. Not to worry about me though, I entered before sharing the news with you. I mean finally, a bag contest I’m eligible to win (one entry per person but I’m going to make everyone in my vast family sign up!). There are two ways to enter– go to any Donna Karan New York store from now until 3/17. Make sure you tell them Bag Snob sent you. No no, it won’t help you. But it will help me to know who I’m up against.

Valentino Pre-Fall 2011

There was a little bit of something for everyone at Valentino’s pre-fall open house. The bags go from downright practical to over-the-top HOT. I was immediately drawn to a medium-sized crocodile bag that had both the double chain strap to wear across the body but also a nifty side piece that bore the house’s trademark studs. The bag can be worn as a clutch by sliding your hand into the grip. It looks very chic! For those whose budget don’t dictate croc, this style also comes in leather, python and other fabrications. As part of the Rock Stud expansion, there are now totes of every shape and size available for whatever suits your mood. The all-leather pewter tote with double handheld straps and one long shoulder strap serves a fabulous purpose for both work and weekend while a rubbery waterproof tote, also trimmed with the studs, is fun and practical for when the weather is less than ideal.

Reed Krakoff Standard Leather Clutch

As much as I like the Reed Krakoff totes, they are way to massive to actually use. The smaller pieces like this, however, work for me. This clutch is so chic and minimalistic, perfect as the one clutch in your wardrobe, if that’s how you roll. It is serious enough to attend big to do’s but you can wear this with jeans and even nice summer shorts for vacation evenings out. The simple hardware closure is so simple it’s sublime. The only other detail is the textured leather which add so much richness. There is also this little coin purse that I love, it is a typical kiss closure but the inside has card slots (around $200). I didn’t like the leather it came in but I’m hoping for Spring there are other fabrication options. Reed Krakoff Standard Leather Clutch for $490.

Prada Denim and Crocodile Hobo

Prada makes some of the most gorgeous bags I have ever seen. This? Not one of them. I am all for denim and crocodile. But when the denim is on my handbag I can’t help but think I’ve jumped in a time machine and headed to a time when Mariah was an actress and starring in “Glitter.” Of course, this Prada bag doesn’t look like a pair of jeans made into a bag, but if you’re classifying a color as “denim” there probably isn’t going to be a great outcome. The shape of the bag is so outdated, and the frayed fringe edges are creeping me out. A crocodile handbag is always nice, but this bag only has a small, crocodile twist closure, which is why I am confused as to why this is a “Denim and Crocodile Hobo.” Guess you can’t win ‘em all! for $1,495

This red handled beauty is $1,660 @Elyse Walker

Smythson of Bond Street iPhone and iPad Covers

I already love Smythson and now that they are taking care of my technology needs, the love has turned to sheer obsession. The colors, the quality and the function! Everything a girl can ask for! This iPhone case is great for those like me who don’t really want a case but need one because I’m clumsy (my phone seems to fly out of the car all the time). This case keeps it safe when not in use and simply slides out when I need it. Right now, it is available in this Ruby gem Damson but for the holidays, it will also come in pink magenta. Also for the holidays is the iPad cover in either a sleeve (as shown) or zip around design (see jump page), prices range from $280-$460 depending on style. I have been searching for the perfect iPad cover since I got the iPad and I settled for a very boring (and ugly) black cover just to tie me over. Well, I know what I want for Christmas. I am ordering the zip around ruby Damson immediately!! Damson iPhone case, pre-order for $155.

Fendi Fall 2011

Classical silhouettes resigned supreme in the bags at Fendi’s fall show. Overscaled in size and popping in bright colors, the handhelds featured nifty longer straps that made them instant cross-bodies. I love the roomy shape of the Fendi day bag for fall; it harks back to an iconic shape Fendi has shown since the days of the momma baguette. Also note the subtle scripted floral detail directly above the FF logo buckle; it adds an air of old world nostalgia to the bag. Offsetting this shape was a felt tote that, while certainly pretty, remains to be seen if will hold its shape due to the soft fabrication.

Dior Fall 2011 Bags

I know Galliano did not foresee his public meltdown or that this collection would be his swan song at Dior but I still can’t help being slightly disappointed by the lack of new bag styles. Dior’s Fall 2011 bag collection was mostly a re-issuing of past season styles in different colors – cherry brown, dark jade, candied apple red, pink snake, cerulean blue, and lilac ostrich. Pretty, yes. Exciting, no. Structured styles reigned supreme, in ranging from petite to imposing and perfect squares to elongated rectangles, with the interjection of a selection of chain-handled hobos and even a couple of bags that looked like no more than frothy dollops of fur. The Miss Dior in crocodile was notable, but it was the Granville in olive green with geometric red contrast stitching that slightly piqued my interest – finally, something I haven’t seen before! Even more interesting, though, was the fact that the atelier appeared at the close to take a bow. Perhaps there were no major statements bags, but a major statement was made: Dior is not Galliano.

Be & D Cameron Bag: Tall, Dark and Handsome

This isn’t a bag I would call “pretty.” It doesn’t exactly ooze glamour or sex appeal; and it certainly isn’t something I’d take with me for a night out. This is a bag I would call …handsome. This two-toned leather bag with gold hardware and ziptop closure is almost regal. You wouldn’t buy it for a fun weekend away with your friends to sample wine and eat bricks of cheese in the car. No, no, no, you would grab this when you are wandering around a museum taking in the arts, or for when you want to spend the day at a little corner café sipping espresso and catching up on your reading list (AKA all of Chelsea Handlers books and the Harry Potter series, they are just so good). The Be & D Cameron bag is classy, understated, and looks a little like a bowling bag, and I enjoy it.If you are feeling this one as well, pick it up at ShopBop for $895

Tod’s Cartella Medium Top Handled Messenger Bag: The Love Affair Continues

Each season, like clockwork, Tod’s steals my heart. This time around, it’s Tod’s “Cartella” bag. Where to begin? A blend of styles (a hint of doctor bag, part ladylike purse), you can carry it top-handled or messenger-style, take your pick. A bag 13″ wide is the most flattering and often most stylish size for anyone – short, tall, young, mature. It just works. Structured to perfection: it sits so perkily (on protective metal feet) and hangs off the wrist or shoulder with ease, while the large outer flap pocket adds interest and functionality. Did I mention this is perfect for summer? The color brings to mind pink sandy beaches and scoops of buttery ice cream. You can color me smitten. This is a “need, want, must have” situation. At Saks Fifth Avenue for $1,845.Pair with: Um, anything? But it would look (especially) lovely with 3.1 Philip Lim’s mouse-gray satin-twill blazer, double-breasted for a cool menswear look and in a color that brings out the “Cartella.” On Net-a-Porter for $675.

My Five Essentials: Featuring Bobbi Brown

I had the good fortune of meeting the inimitable Bobbi Brown over three years ago when I interviewed her. Lucky me: my allotted 30 minutes with the beauty/health/fitness guru became three hours because we couldn’t stop talking and laughing! I had been a fan since college – her lipsticks and no makeup-approach to makeup were life-changing – so when I saw that we were actually carrying matching Birkins – I knew it was a sign we’d be BFF (OK so that part was wishful thinking). Bobbi is a true champion of women. She raised three sons (one now at Stanford, thank you very much) while building her global empire. Her devotion to her family is only rivaled by her commitment to charity. Bobbi sits on the board of Dress for Success and is co-chairing this year’s gala, celebrating her twenty years with the organization. (Find out how you can help at Dress for Success here).Since that first “Birkin” moment, I have learned that, like me, Bobbi is the total Bag Snob. Late night e-mails between us discussibg bags are not unusual. So, read on to discover Bobbi’s five essential bags. You’ll want every one!Tote For traveling between home and the office, I use my monogrammed Goyard bag. It’s the perfect size — not so big that it’s overwhelming, but not so small that all you can fit are the essentials.TravelI never leave home without my hard-sided Louis Vuitton Travel Case. It’s small enough to take as a carry-on and I always pack my travel essentials, like EXTRA Moisturizing Balm and Concealer, so I look great when I get off the plane. TreasureI treasure my Celine bag– everything about it, from its boxy shape to the story behind how I received it. It was a gift from a very good friend of mine, which makes it even more special to me.TrendyThe Hermes Birkin is one of those bags that is classic, it never goes out of style and will always be an “it bag” in my eyes.ClutchMy Louis Vuitton Mini Pochette comes with my everywhere. It’s the perfect size for my iPhone and a lip gloss.

Miu Miu Appliquéd Metallic Leather Clutch: Boom, Boom, Pow!

Expect the unexpected: comic strips are the latest inspiration for the fashionable. (Something is in the air; MAC has super hero-themed makeup and a Wonder Woman remake is in the works). This starburst-covered, metallic bag is a frisky take on super-hero chic, as opposed to say, thigh-high boots or mega-thick, waist-cinching belts. It’s too gimmicky for my taste, especially shown with the matching Miu Miu skirt, but it’s definitely fun if you’re looking for a trendy conversation piece. All you need is a pair of roller skates and you’ll be the most powerful girl in the rink. At Net-a-Porter for $1,350.Pair with: Nude, cropped leather pants ought to toughen the kitsch bag up, without going over the top. Wear Zadig & Voltaire’s “Ava” style and get instant Parisian cool.On Net-a-Porter for $770.

Oryany Rafia and Leather Hobo: Leader of the Pack

This bag is such great fun for the style icon who doesn’t follow the crowd. A laid-back hobo with summer-worthy details – raffia-wrapped strap and sprinkling of fringe – Oryany has made a frugal snob find that speaks volumes to personal style. And those are usually the edgiest girls. (Remember years ago when everyone was surprised to spot Kate Moss wearing high-street staple Topshop?) I love a bag that’s got loads of its own spunk without being showy. Details like the asymmetrical zipper make it. And who can ignore the molten color? Orange is hot for summer. Wear it with khaki to brighten up a casual day look, and whatever you do, wear it with your own sense of style. At Neiman Marcus for $398.Pair with: A personalized cuff helps establish independence; Jessica Kagan Cushman’s resin zodiac cuffs come with constellations for each astrological sign, for $85.

Alexander McQueen “Obi Bow” Clutch: What’s in a Name?

Since inheriting the imposing task of preserving Alexander McQueen‘s legacy, Sarah Burton has continued to surprise and delight. Instead of doing the expected and continuing releases of bestsellers, she has come up with new designs appealing to McQueen die-hards (that would be me), simultaneously garnering a new audience.McQueen was famed for a sense of gothic, dark femininity, and Burton is not imitating the master but expanding his vision through an innate sensibility: this bag is a prime example. The name “Obi Bow Clutch” sounds like it would be absurdly girly, even verging on something in which one might tote feminine hygiene products. Thankfully, in Burton’s expert hands, the result is intelligent and progressive. The bow is not even close to a poofy dollop; it’s a hard, twisted piece of bag sculpture (much like an actual obi). A large and functional clutch, the shiny gold hardware imbues just enough glitter. Covetable and wearable: Burton knows what a woman wants. At Alexander McQueen for $950.Pair with: A bootie that is also angular and atypically feminine, such as Dolce & Gabbana’s macrame lace open-toe ankle boots. On LuisaviaRoma for $848.20.

Swash Zebra Jungle Scarf Bag: A Beautiful Nightmare

This bag is so ugly. So why I can’t I take my eyes off it? It’s a scene from the menagerie of my nightmares. Where to begin? Scary rabid animals have been printed on silk to look as if they’ve been aggressively chained to the handles. The fire-eyed snake, snarling sharp little teeth, could have been hatched in a nuclear waste dump. The grotesquely abstracted zebra stripes more closely resemble the long, nasty tails of opossums, pretty much the most despicable animal ever. And perhaps most strangely, those chains might actually be trombones. Needless to say, the overall outcome should repulse me, but instead I’m intrigued. There’s definitely a lure in the perverse. And while it’s hardly attractive, I’m oddly attracted to it. I’m not about to carry this surreal handbag myself, but I would give props to the woman who does, for her boldness and strong sense of self. At Barneys New York for $595.Pair with: Since your letting your devilish side out, a red dress is in order. Narciso Rodriguez‘s crew-neck sheath dress is clean and classy. At Barneys New York for $1,595.

Reed Krakoff Gym Bag I & II

I think it’s safe to say Reed Krakoff‘s Gym Bag (in two sizes) is not really meant for the gym. Unless you are both Gym & Bag Snob and require a $4,500 python bag to tote your pink boxing gloves. I like the streamlined simple totes and $790 for the smaller leather version is quite reasonable. Great for work or weekends and yes, even the gym. The Five Essentials Featuring Samantha Yanks

I meet the coolest people on Twitter, many of whom have become my IRL friends (that’s social media talk for In-Real-Life). One of them happens to be Samantha Yanks, the Editor-in-Chief of Gotham and Hamptons magazines. Samantha, who started out as an accessories editor for Vogue, was formerly the Fashion and Accessories Director for Niche Media – she scoured every city in the country for the coolest looks and hottest trends. She is the ultimate modern working mom – running magazines, making TV appearances, and squeezing in time to tweet about the best eateries, parks, and museums in New York City. Meredith Wendell Python-Trimmed Raffia Tote: Handle With Flair

Plain and simple: nothing beats a great, fun summer bag. Like Meredith Wendell’s cream raffia tote with black-tinged green python trim and yellow patent-leather handles! A simplistic bag like this could be benign, but it’s anything but. I love the pop of color against the raffia – just a smidge is all it takes to take ordinary to enviable. Serious skins – plus a bright turquoise plaque – bring a splash of exotic-luxe whimsy to raw earthiness. With a detachable cotton rope shoulder strap (if you can let go of those fabulous handles!), inside zip pocket, and red twill lining – another, and even more giggle-inducing, pop of color – this roomy tote is ideal for carrying around all of our summer necessities. When devil-may-care meets unquestionably simple, you get playful, practical, and classy: a perfect daytime tote! On Net-a-Porter for $550.Pair with: Never try to match baby-touches of intense color, unless it happens by divine wardrobe intervention! Let your tote’s bright bits speak for themselves with Pierre Hardy’s timeless cutout sandals: simple, stacked, and so neutral you can go buck-wild with your pedicure, guilt-free. At Barneys New York for $940.

My Five Essentials Featuring Sasha Charnin Morrison, Author of Secrets of Stylists

Blogging has been the most rewarding professional career I’ve ever had, and it’s also brought incredible people in to my personal life. It’s hard to imagine meeting genuine friends over the internet, especially ones who become your confidante, cheerleader and a constant source of support and encouragement but that’s what happened when I met Sasha Charnin Morrison, Fashion Director of US Weekly and author of Secrets of Stylists: An Insider’s Guide to Styling the StarsSecrets of Stylists (for sale now on Amazon, order your copy if you know what’s good for your style).Sasha is a true original and her love of fashion is infectious (it’s not unusual to find us obsessing over bags and shoes at 2am together online!)- she attributes her fashion sense to her stepmother Jade Hobson (former Creative Director at Vogue under Grace Mirabella) who nurtured her fashion obsession at an early age. Sasha put in serious time as fashion director at Allure, Elle and Harper’s Bazaar and did the fashion show circuit globally 3 months out of the year. When she had her twins, she jumped ship to US magazine in order to stay in NYC with them.In her new book, Secrets of Stylists: An Insider’s Guide to Styling the Stars“Secrets of Stylists”– Sasha gives the inside scoop on being a celeb stylist and how to obtain your dream of being one. But even if you have no aspirations of being a stylist, you will be extremely entertained by her book as no one tells a story as well as Sasha! If you live in NYC, please stop by Sasha’s book launch party at Scoop tomorrow (Tuesday, May 3rd from 6-8pm) hosted by famed stylist Annabel Tollman. I will be there of course (I’m in it along with a few of my favorite bags!) and would love to have a glass of bubbly with you– rsvp for the party here!Jump to read Sasha’s favorite Five Essential bags (and then some, she added her own category!)–I am in love with the Thursday Friday bags! Hermes is out of their minds to for suing them to cease and desist. I mean, come on, I think WE ALL KNOW THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THIS AND THE REAL THANG?! It’s the perfect daily tote to keep an extra pair of shoes, change of clothes and anything else I need throughout the day running around with my twin boys. My color? Camel.I believe in trying to be chic and functional at all times, but it gets tough while traveling because baggage claim treats bags like they’re unwanted stepchildren! My Tumi rolley bags not only get me around in style, they take the abuse fabulously. I have two sizes, and working my way up to a 3rd. Love my Tumi Vapor small size in silver, extended trip in gold and can’t wait to buy the largest in black soon.Celine bigger black bag with a fox tail. (Which I already own). Celine casts a mysterious spell on me in regards to its bags. There is something refined and classic– not usually something I would gravitate to normally. But there’s always a twist of some sort– the shape, the color, the blocked color, the animal print. I love the construction of this particular bag because I am a sucker for a boxy tote bag! The fact that it has grown bigger makes me want it even more-I already have one, how many do you need?! As many as you can get your paws on. I also love the fox tail attachment.Torn: I love the Versace fringed insanity, the Valentino Rockstud in leopard (not included above), Louboutin snake with the bow and chain (but I’m not really a bow person) and crazy for Cavalli fringed hippie bag. That gorgeous Chanel brown bag. I don’t know what it does… but I want it, badly!Well. There’s only one. The McQueen Brittania Punk leather box clutch. It won’t matter what you’re wearing when you have this in your clutches!

Chloé Elsie Large Day Bag; Isn’t She Lovely?

This bag puts a smile on my face, and if you knew how crazy my life is right now, you’d know that is an accomplishment. Well done Chloé Elsie Large Day Bag. Who says money can’t buy happiness anyway. I would love to grab this pink and tan picture of perfection on a sunny spring day with a pair of girlie pumps and a sundress and go pick daisies. Chanel “Boy” Bags: You Think You Know, But You Have No Idea

When you hear the two words, “Chanel bag” – which is likely more often than we even notice – the last thing that comes to mind is “androgyny.” There is the “Mademoiselle,” the flirtatious interlocked-Cs, the quilted leathers and tactile chains. But “Boy”? This ground-breaking new collection of bags will change everything you think you knew about Chanel bags, and perhaps even the design house as a whole. The diehard Chanel purists will resist, but let me tell you: this is major. As major as the day Coco Chanel herself whipped a belt around her beau’s jacket, cinched it with conviction, and called it her own.The deliciously sleek “Boy” Chanel bag has crisp industrial hardware in distressed silver or bronze, so jarringly unlike the feminine clasps we know and love. It is produced in four sizes, ranging from a slick slide-handle clutch to a long-strapped purse to a large and regal north-to-south tote. Its palette of colors is delicate yet powerful: flat red, deep black, intense grey, lead green and brilliant ivory. Much like an actual boy himself – masculine, yes, but lacking in any coarse testosterone so his fineness and tenderness is maintained. Is androgyny the new femininity?

Gucci for UNICEF “Sukey” Tote: Sukey Saves the Day

Year after year, the House of Gucci has shown dedication in its support of UNICEF’s Schools for Africa project. This initiative, whose mission is to give needy African children the opportunity for a quality education, has been of great importance to Gucci for the past seven years. Starting in 2005, Gucci’s commitment to UNICEF has resulted in donations of over $9 million dollars, making it the largest corporate donor to the Schools for Africa project. Each year, 25% of the retail sales of a specially chosen item are donated to this meaningful cause, and this year is no disappointment. Creative Director, Frida Giannini, has taken the bestselling “Sukey” bag and designed an updated version. It features the enduring 1935 Diamante motif embossed on dark chocolate brown calfskin. A hand waxing technique gives the bag a vintage look, and with delicate hardware (and the ever-beloved insignia) it is both classic and contemporary. This is a carryall that works for everyone – and knowing a portion of your dollars are going to such a worthy cause makes it a fulfilling purchase. Gucci is putting their best foot forward for a fantastic organization by reinventing a classic, and I can’t think of a better way to show support than by wearing it on your arm! At Gucci from June 15, 2011-February 28, 2012.

Henry Beguelin Ruched Top Handle Hobo: My Hobo and Me

You can’t resist loving a good hobo bag. They are the easiest of all bag styles to tote around. They sit cozily at your side – there’s something comforting about the company, isn’t there? And it’s the ultimate in function. For all that easy function, the form can lean towards the repetitive side. How often do you find one that is totally unique and stands out?Thank you, Henry Beguelin! You have presented us with a super-exciting hobo (almost an oxy moron). I can’t even remember the last time I thought that about one. The ruched suede, contrasting handle doesn’t just jazz it up, it’s genius: in suede, it has traction to ensure it never slips off your shoulder. But the handle has a meager 3.5″ drop, which is disappointing to me because it doesn’t fit under my arm. I’m willing to let it slide, since the bag is so cool. At least the slouch of the bag gives it extra room so it will work for most.White’s the way to go: set against the brown handle, it gives the bohemian tinge a shot of polish, just as Beguelin’s bag will give your hobo options a shot of energy. At Neiman Marcus for $1,195.Pair with: Casual olive twill pants get a sleek makeover with a cropped length and tight fit. Check out J. Brand‘s “Agnes” pants, and enjoy Net-a-Porter‘s end-of-season sale!On Net-a-Porter for $135 (from $225).

Jimmy Choo “Batheth” Large Snakeskin-Trimmed Raffia Tote: Wild Card

Too reserved to rock a tiger-print bikini? You’re not alone. I’ll probably reserve the overtly animalistic swimwear for video vixens, but I would consider this huge Jimmy Choo tote as my beach (and pool) bag. Because often what I won’t wear, my bags will – and I thank them for it.Animal-print (it’s a bit mysterious; kind of tiger-snake hybrid) trimmed generously in elaphe snakeskin, which is trimmed in buckles, sounds like too, too much. But look closer: somehow this wild print on raffia gives it sophistication. South Beach-style sophistication. I could see the oversized “Batheth” tote packed with my towel, magazines, iPad, sunscreen, and water bottle – and whatever else I so choose to toss in this “everything but…” bag – lounging next to me poolside at the Delano.A suede lining (beware chlorine and cocktail splashes) with internal pockets means you can organize everything you toss in, and fortunately, that designer-stamped hanging tag is removable – purposeful flair is to be welcomed, unnecessary accoutrements are not. On Net-a-Porter for $875 (was $1,250).Pair with: A casual rayon romper will look beachy, not chichi, as a poolside cover-up. Mikoh‘s strapless and low-drawstring waist ivory onesie will give playful ease to this mega-tote. At Barneys New York for $152.

L’Wren Scott Small Stamped Leather Pouchette: True Blood

Model-turned-stylist-turned-fashion designer (no one makes more slimming or wearable pencil skirt; her zipper detail allows you to adjust it so you can actually walk!) L’Wren Scott can now add handbag designer to her impressive resumé. Dedicated to elegant luxury, she’s brought that along with some rock ‘n’ roll spirit (thanks, Mick!) to this deep red clutch. Sanguine leather looks extra intense when it’s heavily embossed for a dark, shadowy effect, but the clean envelope shape mellows it out and keeps it classic. The result of this stamped floral pattern is a little vampiric, slightly Southwestern, and totally L’Wren Scott. As she is just releasing her first full-size line, more on her bag collection to come! At Barneys New York for $1,730.Pair with: A shoe that’s sleek though a bit off-kilter, such as Fendi‘s mesh platform shoe bootie, pale gray suede, white leather, and flesh-toned mesh on a stacked heel. At Barneys New York for $559 (from $935).

Mark Cross Bags: Past Perfect, Future Classics

UPDATE: Apologies for the error earlier today! Here are the images of the Mark Cross bags!Once touted as the American “Gucci” – bags by the classic leather company were carried by Grace Kelly, their overnight case was given a cameo in Hitchcock’s “Rear Window,” and Liz Taylor famously bought a whopping 70 pieces of luggage for herself and Richard Burton – Mark Cross has just re-launched with a bang. All the while staying true to the brand’s trademark: French and Italian leathers at modern price points in timeless styles.Vibrant colors and confident shapes with unfussy maturity make for instant classics. Plus, scratch-proof stamped and treated leather, in appealing shades of cool Clementine, cheerful teal, and cobalt that’s somehow on the neutral side, will take a beating and beyond. The “Beaumont” chain-strap clutches, the flirtiest of the bunch, in calf and raffia are just begging for a stroll in the sun, while the “Josephine” clutch in mouse gray or stirring wine will look lovely with a cinch-waisted, full-skirted dress – some volume to counter their cleanness. But it’s the Saffiano cross-body flap bag, such soft leather in a rich blue, that’s my favorite – and the one I ordered. Luxurious tradition to be worn with modern easiness, slung across the body, for an ideal blend.Look for their exclusive relaunch at Saks Fifth Avenue, from $465-$765 and for more details, go to Mark Cross website here.

Nancy Gonzalez on Moda Operandi: A Shopping Event as Rare as a Hot Pink Crocodile

Nancy Gonzalez says that she incorporates elements in each and everyone of her bags to “make us smile.” And that she does! Not only is she our favorite Colombian bag designer, now her bags are hitting Asia with a big bang. My friends here covet my chic croc totes and clutches with the as much zeal as when they fawn over my Hermès. You won’t find that surprising when you look at her exuberant new resort collection, which is hitting genius insider site Moda Operandi today in full (a rare event; she almost never sells online)!Inspired by the wildlife and wild colors of her native country, ribbons of crocodile and python have been entwined for a basket-weave texture and python has been fused with flashes of metallic. Strips of skin alternated with Panama straw bring an out-of-this-world bag down to earth, and I’ve never seen more vibrant shades of pink and blue.So if you haven’t applied for Moda Operandi yet, here’s even more motivation. It makes you the buyer – you can choose exactly what you want (like which of Nancy’s 34 new styles), instead of waiting nervously to see what the department stores choose. This is the only way to shop if you want to have the latest and greatest, and now it’s Gonzalez-approved!

Maison Martin Margiela Love: Fashion, Please Meet Function

Usually Margiela is not one to be pragmatic, fashion over function at all cost seems to be the M.O. But someone over there has the same issues and annoyances that I do with wallets because this has function in mind, while definitely NOT at the cost of fashion. The use of animal print here is right on. An ingenious design that is as unique as it is functional, this wallet offers access and organization without fumbling, zipping, snapping, threading or even the need to simply fold over. OK, the change pocket requires a snap but the rest of the wallet is set up like a man’s wallet, simple and open. Cards, cash and change – in and out totally unobstructed. This will also lighten your load, try weighting your wallet, it accounts for half of your bag’s weight! At Net-a-Porter $210Pair with the frame shoulder bag, another perfect fashion meets function new love of mine. It’s a frame that folds flat when worn and completely opens up for full view of the interior. It’s a minimalist magic bag that transforms into a square bin when needed. I must have both and with my new efficiency, I can spend my time doing more shopping! At Saks Fifth Avenue for $995.

Purple is even funkier in oversized ostrich-effect PVC courtesy

While I don’t necessarily advise selecting a wickedly bright bag as an investment purchase, uncommon – and often impractical – colors can be so appealing, if only just to browse. They are youthful, unexpected, and ensure you’ll get noticed even if the rest of your look consists of the most mundane jeans and T-shirt. So if you were going for a high-wattage bag, which would it be?Givenchy’s “Nightingale” bag, a new-classic style, is reminiscent of a big wad of watermelon taffy in this edible shade of pink.Givenchy “Nightingale” Medium Shoulder Bag in Pink on Luisa Via Roma for $2,155.If you prefer natural sugar to artificial, Dolce & Gabbana’s ladylike “Miss Sicily” top-handle satchel looks packed with Vitamin C.Dolce & Gabbana “Miss Sicily” Top Handle Bag in Orange on Luisa Via Roma for $1,807.of Marc by Marc Jacobs (and the price tag is easier to swallow for a shade you might tire of quickly).Marc by Marc Jacobs “Lucy” Ostrich-Effect PVC Tote on Net-a-Porter for $400.Perhaps ultra-violet is more your thing. Balmain Black Leather Zipper Bag

Why hello Balmain, is this the best you could come up with? I had such high expectations of your bags but you disappoint, season after season. I mean exposed and opened zippers do spice up a basic black bag but it’s been done done and done by so many designers that I’m tired just looking at it. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t hate it. I love the trendy punk rock thing as much as the next 80s kid but this looks like something from Forever 21 that should cost about $39.99, not THREE THOUSAND dollars. Some of you will try and argue with me that Balmain is almost like couture (key word is ALMOST) but I’m not buying it. If you do, you’re not fit to carry your wallet and should let me be the trustee of it.Balmain Black Leather Zipper Bag for $3,195

International Sale- Final Reductions

I am still in Asia, which means I’m able to shop the International sale (actually you can, too- just change your country to the UK!). Many designers (including Alaia) are priced lower on the international version of Net-a-porter, probably due to US customs and duties. This makes it very tempting for me to shop! Of course I have that change of season dilemma of, do I buy more bargains? Or buy fall/winter stuff? I can never decide so I usually do both (covering all the bases my friends). The UK site also carries different inventory from the US, which makes it very exciting while I treasure hunt (like the discovery of the Nancy Gonzalez linen crocodile summery tote!).Have you finished your sale shopping? Or are you in the mood for more bargains? Check out the international final sale here!

Anya Hindmarch Huxley Tote: A Vote for a Tassel Tote

You all know how much I love tote bags. I love their simplicity and function, the ease with which I carry one. So here’s another that caught my eye. The Anya Hindmarch “Huxley” fits the bill – it’s simple and roomy. And although I don’t usually like tassels, this stingray-embossed tassel pull at the zipper is not bad. The leather tote features rolled handles, which I do love. But I would never use the detachable canvas strap (unless I was using this as one of my carry-on travel bags, for a serious messenger look). It also sports other goodies, such as metal feet, a pen slot and key hook, and of course, a couple of patch pockets. If I keep finding tote bags I like, pretty soon I’ll be carrying a tote in a tote! On ShopBop for $1,595.Pair: Equally simple and comfortable is a pair of cool orange ballet flats. Jil Sander‘s are a timeless style in a right-on color. On Net-a-Porter for $425.

Salvatore Ferragamo Leopard-Print Pony Hair Tote: Taming the Wildcat

Sometimes the all the elements – color, print, material, hardware, shape, and size – converge in such a way you get a balance that’s sheer perfection. By now you well know I’m a sucker for spots, but lately I’ve moved onto to an even more neutral variation. Gray leopard is officially my new favorite animal print. It’s more subtle and less Vegas, more refined and less kitsch.Salvatore Ferragamo‘s take on colorless leopard is one of the best I’ve seen by far. It’s highbrow without being uptight. By putting the spots under a magnifying glass, the effect is graphic and striking. On deeply touchable pony hair, it’s divine. As a top handle tote with a scaled-down flap, crimped edges, and measured dashes of black leather and gold hardware, I’m finding this bag impossible to resist. And why should I even try? This is the sort of logical investment piece you will never regret, especially when you’re still carrying it years later – because ladylike-cool never goes out of style. At Salvatore Ferragamo for $2,590. Call 1-800-628-8916 for inquiries.Pair with: I’m seeing gray days ahead. And I couldn’t be happier. I plan on indulging my tote’s muted spots with Giuseppe Zanotti‘s razor-sharp gray stiletto booties, with two degrees of platform to keep you grounded. Giuseppe Zanotti Double Platform Bootie, $795.

Emm Kuo Structured Python Messenger: Mixed Messenger

New bag designer Emmaline Ranzman (her Emm Kuo line was launched just a year ago) is a mix master. Taipei-born and raised between New York and Hawaii, her bags are as eclectic as her multi-faceted upbringing, making her a fresh face on the circuit that stands out among the pack.Bag in point, this structured python messenger. The strong, tapered flap makes it far more feminine than a boxy messenger – it almost looks more like a formal handbag. The same goes for the adjustable python-and-chain link blend strap; the snakeskin shoulder patch keeps you comfortable and fabulous. Skin with a slightly pinkish tint adds a touch of girliness, but it’s still totally neutral.Ranzman’s designs are all about “depth and layers,” and it shows in the contrast side paneling. I especially love how the shape of the messenger follows the python’s scale patterns. And the squared-off metal closure? An Emm Kuo signature. Something tells me we’ll be seeing more of these little buckles hanging from the bodices of snobs from the West Coast to East Coast and over in the Pacific Rim. At Intermix for $1,398.Pair with: Dash around town with your Emm Kuo messenger and a very-now Eugenia Kim rabbit-felt hat. It’s a toss up between which is more stylish: the wide-brimmed “Carly” or the “Kurt” fedora. Eugenia Kim Hats, $310-$330.
