Luxury bag prices to rocket even higher!!!

Bottega woven croc: $78,000   Crocodile birkin with diamonds: $148,000Is leather the new diamonds?  Bag prices have been steadily climbing for several years yet retailers say they have not reached their potential ceiling?!?!  Terry Lundgren, CEO of Federated Department Stores, described it as “To infinity and beyond!”  It’s not unusual to see prices of luxury bags range from $5,000 – $148,000 these days, steep even for Bag Snob standards but they plan to increase them even more?  How stupid do they think we are?  It’s not as if some miracle cream has been added that will banish cellulite and wrinkles when you come in contact with the bags (which would actually make it priceless).  Industry sources say component costs are higher but come on, it’s leather, a by product for goodness sake!  Popularity of exotic skins are also to blame and you all know I adore croc and python but I won’t stand being taken advantage of!Almost every luxury brand has a bag in the 5 figures nowadays.  So who are regularly buying $10,000 bags? Mostly Europeans who take advantage of the weak dollar, namely consumers from England, Germany, Italy and Russia.  And there are clients on waitlists for crocodile birkins with diamonds that costs $148,000!  There is no reason why a bag should cost that much, I don’t care if it’s made of crocodile with diamonds on the hardware.  In a world of strife and conflict, it seems ridiculous to be spending this kind of money on a bag.  But what do I know, I’m just a girl blogging about her obsession of bags.  Seriously, I love bags more than anyone but I have my limits.  I study all the bags available and make informed choices each season to add to my collection.  And yes, I buy more than one bag a season, but I have a vast wardrobe of bags that range from funky inexpensive clutches to Hermes birkins and it’s a collection I have slowly built in the last 20 years since I was 16 and it’s filled with classics, not “it” bags that cost more than cars.Even our beloved Bottega Veneta has a crocodile bag this season priced at $78,000, what, was that crocodile fed caviar and champagne and given regular IPL peels and facials?  Women who pay $100,000 for special bags claim it guarantees they have a bag their friends don’t own.  I, too covet special bags noone else has, but I am not insane.Wait ’til Kelly hears about this, she is going to hit the roof.  We’ve long discussed launching our own line of luxurious bags at reasonable prices.  Perhaps it’s time we did.  What do you think?  How much are you willing to pay for luxury?and Doyle New York Source: WWD

Lanvin “Nil” Red Patent Bag

Nil sports bag by LanvinHot for Spring is the punk rockin’ Nil bag from Lanvin in red patent leather and metallic hardware.  It is so perfect for Valentine’s Day, I can’t think of a better way to treat yourself than with a glamorous red bag!  I am loving the exterior zippered compartment in addition to the two front flap pockets, it’s important to stay organized but just as important to look chic while being anal.  Those of you resisting the patent leather look should really try it.  Not only is patent leather modern and sleek, it is so easy to maintain.  I smeared lip gloss on one of my patent bags recently and it wiped right off with a baby wipe (a damp cloth will do same).   Call Barneys New York to order yours!  469-221-4723Happy Valentines Day everyone!!!

One of our favorite bag designers is once again making us weak in the knees with this amazing elegant and ladylike calf hair chain bag.  I love the combination of the chain and leather handle, it makes it less bulky and easier to carry.  We’ve all had to deal with the annoying chain slipping off our shoulders!  The leather detail along the center with the hardware makes this bag absolutely perfect.  You can’t go wrong with this bag, it just says to the world, “I am a classic beauty!”.   Net-a-Porter for $1125.

Ralph Lauren “Ricky” Alligator Bag

Inspired by a vintage Cooper saddle carrier, the luxurious Ricky bag from Ralph Lauren is crafted from exquisite American alligator and finished with custom Italian hardware. It’s also one of the best deals in exotic bags on the market.  The Burberry crocodile bag is $22,000 and a Croc Hermes birkin is $30,000, in comparison the Ricky gator bag is a mere $14,000, which means you can make your mortgage payment and look stylish.  (What’s the difference you ask?  Alligators are the giant scary reptiles from America, Crocodiles are the giant scary reptiles from the rest of the world).  I know what you’re thinking, it resembles the birkin but think of it as the American equestrian interpretation.  I played around with it and also like the birkin, it’s best used open to avoid the hassle of getting in and out of the straps.  And seriously, do you not want to dive in to the Ralph Lauren catalogue and live his vision?  It’s available in half a dozen shades and four sizes, but I love the glossy black version, it’s a classic that will last a lifetime.  Call Dana Guercio at the Ralph Lauren store in Highland Park 214-522-5270 to purchase!PRICE UPDATE: $14,000 for 35cm, $10,000 for 30cm, call Dana for the price of 25cm.

Just Cavalli Lace Giraffe Hobo

I find this Jimmy Choo Keeya tote very appealing, the subtle metallic color is absolutely gorgeous and the leather detail is funky and interesting on a simply designed tote.  It kind of resembles woven leather but upon closer inspection, it’s slashed in a very punk rock and fun way, not a crazy way that we’ve come to associate with Jimmy Choo bags.  Actually, you would never guess it was from Jimmy Choo until you see the engraved metal hardware.  Two side pockets and three divided interior compartments also make it easy to stay organized while looking impossibly chic.  A great summer travel bag for trips to Portofino or St. Tropez.  At Net-A-Porter for $1,395(Bag Snob would like to correct a statement made in an earlier article about Sandra Choi being the designer behind Jimmy Choo bags.  She is only responsible for the fabulous shoe collection, which you all know we adore.)

With all the hoopla over the Louis Vuitton patchwork mess, Roberto Cavalli must be feeling lonely and neglected.  We’ve refrained from ragging on the leopard and flower prints that usually assault Cavalli designs cuz hey, we’ve given in to an occasional leopard whim ourselves and Kelly certainly has had her share of floral violations in her Ferragamo days but seriously, there is never, EVER, an excuse for carrying a bag described as “Lace Giraffe”.  Don’t let anyone fool you, Giraffe is not the new Leopard.  Just look at this bag, is there anything that remotely resembles a bag that anyone in their right minds would carry?  Not only is it an ugly Giraffe trimmed in lace, it’s apparently a Giraffe with warts.  We know this is the Just Cavalli diffusion line meant for a younger consumer or one with lesser financial means but come on, just cuz one is young or lacking in funds does not mean they have no taste.  $430 at eLuxury

Stella McCartney Environmental Bag

It seems like everyone is doing an environmental shopping bag these days.  This one from Stella McCartney is due out this June for $495 and is made of organic cotton.  Hermes is also coming out with one, the Silky Pop reusable bag for $960.  It collapsesand folds up to a wallet size calfskin pouch.  There is also a grocery tote from designer Consuelo Castiglioni of Marni for $843.  I am all for being environmental and using less plastic bags – of course I love a fabulous bag even if it is for grocery shopping but there is something amiss with spending this amount of money for leaking poultry and juicy strawberries.  In Europe everyone carries one of these around for stopping by the bakery or picking up oranges on the way home but in the US we just don’t shop that way.  I need at least 3 bags for a week’s worth of groceries.  I mean, at those prices it makes more sense to “reuse” my own has-been bags in my closet, like all my dozens of nylon Prada totes.  Or why not buy any one of the hundreds of giant bags out there, like the Chanel patent Cabas garbage bag for $1000.  It is really giant so you can fit a gallon of milk, an 8 pound chicken and 3 boxes of cereal with room to spare.   And the patent leather makes it easy to clean for meaty spills.   Or more realistically, get a Le Pliage from Longchamp for $115.  I feel like economy should come into play when you’re trying to be environmental because there are resources being used that could go to something more worthy (like a nice bag you can use for a lifetime instead of one that will get trashed in a few months) .  At some point, it just doesn’t make any sense.

Fair Trade Does a World of Good

Fancy Footwork Tote and Glossy Goodness BowlI guess today is global awareness day at Bag Snob.  Now wouldn’t it be great to be environmental and socially conscious?  If you just want a cute shopping tote ($29.95) that is useful and reusable, why not get one of these from World of Good, a website that sells fair trade products made by artisans around the world.  Fair trade practice is one that pays artisans fair wages, provides safe working conditions, supports the communities they’re in and helps sustain the local environment.  I have a bracelet and a little jewelry box with amazing craftsmanship and cute, too!  I shopped around and found more products that I am going to get.  The Glossy Goodness Bowl ($19.95),handmade in Vietnam, is great for snacks and the Bowled Over Tray ($34.95) handcrafted in the Philippines from Acacia wood is perfect for displaying fruit.  I love the beautiful wood and it’ll look so nice on my dining table.  Does all this not look like stuff you get for hundreds of dollars at some fancy shop?  I can’t wait to get the Moo-ve Over for Fair Trade Tong ($39.95) made from buffalo horn and wood in Vietnam for serving my daily salads.  Now, why wouldn’t you want to feel good about what you buy and be able to get beautiful hand-crafted products at great prices?  It’s win win for everyone!  Please help us in supporting free trade and give better lives to the communities that benefit from it.Bowled Over Tray and Moo-ve Over For Fair Trade Tongs

Julie Gilhart – The Style Maker

Photo credit: Courtney Perry for F!DI had the privilege of meeting one of the most powerful figures in the fashion industry, Julie Gilhart- Fashion Director and Senior VP of Barneys New York, last month in Dallas.  I was invited to attend a breakfast with her and although I was inexcusably late she was kind enough to spend an hour with me after breakfast to talk about fashion (and by the way, talking to Julie about fashion is like talking to the Dalai Lama about buddhism!).BackgroundJulie grew up in Dallas but always wanted to be a surfer girl (she now surfs regularly).  Her first job was at Lily Pulitzer and she went to work for Neiman Marcus after college as the Assistant Buyer to Benita Downing, one of the great legendary buyers of NM who traveled extensively with Stanley Marcus. The Love of BagsAs with all the uber fashionable, Julie has a thing for bags.  The classics she loves are Balenciaga (which Barneys was the first to carry in the US) and Givenchy.  For Spring she has chosen the Lanvin clutch/tote, the white Balenciaga with gold grommets and the Givenchy Clarabelle.   Currently, she has been toting around her fave – the Bottega Veneta beluga tote in black (which Bottega has renamed “Julie”), other than the braided handle, it is non-recognizable as anything but a beautifully made bag.   As for the “it bag” phenomenon, she thinks it instantly makes a bag non “it” when it’s being marketed or called “it”.  Either you got it or you don’t.   When asked if there were any bags to watch for, she had a couple immediately in mind; Valextra, for their beautifully made structured classic lines and Paula Thomas for Thomas Wylde.Style SecretsAnything simple and easy.  Functional clothes that you don’t have to think too much about is important to her so that she can focus on family, her job and the state of the world.  She says that fashion has a way of infiltrating every aspect of our lives so it is important to be in conversation about it and understand it but she marches to her own beat and does not follow any trends.  As Julie said, “Vogue put it best, ‘Intelligent clothes allow you to be intelligent about everything else’.  For me that is it, clothes need to make you feel beautiful and confident so you can think about everything else.”Barneys ApproachThe Barneys approach to fashion is very simple.  They ask two basic questions:  Is the product good?  And is the designer behind the product interesting and talented?  Barneys does not subscribe to marketing tricks, hype and the red carpet.  They are firm believers that it is the product and the designers that create the energy. What’s Next?Interestingly, the designer she said to watch for is Isabel Toledo who is designing for Anne Klein (her husband did the paintings in the store and Barneys was the first to carry her collection).  For years, Isabel has been an underground favorite.  Every designer that comes into Barneys admires her work.  “Her collection for Anne Klein is amazing, clothes you can wear everyday, plus glamour for evening, “ Julie said.Another important designer is Sophia Kokosalaki of Vionnet (dresses photographed with Julie) Julie explained that The Vionnet House was founded in 1912 and closed in 1939. It was by a woman considered as one of the greatest dressmakers of the 20th century- a fashion genius who has inspired almost every designer since that time.  She based her aesthetic on glamour, simplicity, sensuous, and innovative designs. In fact she is credited with inventing the bias cut.  Azzedine Alaia (Julie is a regular in Alaia’s kitchen, often eating lunch or dinner cooked by Alaia while discussing fashion- what I wouldn’t give to be at one of those meals!) has said that Madame Vionnet’s dresses are the only garments you can take apart and cannot copy the pattern.   I tried on several of the Vionnet dresses and they are amazingly flattering.  Pale in coloration is Julie’s favorite color tone of the season and she declared strapless an important look for spring.Julie is the consummate cool chick, just hanging out with her made me feel cool!  After our interview, we both proceeded to scour the racks at the new Barneys in Dallas for the latest Spring goodies before her taxi whisked her off to the airport to make her flight back to New York.

Badgley Mischka Platinum Day Bags

Badgley Mischka is expanding its fashion empire with a new day bag collection under its Platinum label.  The Platinum Day bag is the third line of bags along with Couture and Evening.  This collection is expected to generate 50 percent of the brand’s total sales for next year and will retail from $300-$600.The design duo behind the label, Mark Badgley and James Mischka hopes to capture the mass market with its new line of bags.  “With this collection, our goal is to dress our customers in all aspects of their daily lifestyle,” Badgley said. “This is the type of woman who works, she’s a career woman, she carpools, but she’s modern. She’s our sportswear customer.”The collection consists of 47 styles among three categories. The “casual” bags are a series of everyday bags in napa leather, patent leather and straw. The attitude bags will be offered in two toned hardware and attention getting bold colors in patent leather, fake crocodile and ostrich. The “leisure” bags are meant to be ideal for a day at the beach or a stroll in the city and feature napa leather and patent-trimmed cotton canvas. With its latest launch, Badgley Mischka will continue to bring products to more women than just the red-carpet clientele who don its beaded eveningwear.  “The collection really opens up a new opportunity for us,” Badgley said. “We have celebrities who carry our couture day bags, like Jessica Simpson and Teri Hatcher. But these will really broaden our brand.”So those of you who salivate over red carpet looks each season can now obtain a piece of Hollywood glamour at an affordable price.  Badgely Mischka Evening bags currently at Saks.Badgley Mischka Maclaine ClutchSource:WWD

Shopping Fall 2007 – 5 tips to update your Bag Wardrobe

There is way too much information out there to process each season; with designers and magazines frantically throwing bags at us hoping for something to catch on, how can we distinguish the crap from the gems?  Well I have taken it upon myself once again to guide you through the mess, I mean the looks of the season (my husband says I am nosy but I maintain I am HELPFUL!)5 tips to update your Fall Bag Wardrobe1. Bold Color – Do not be afraid of electric blue (like the Jimmy Choo clutch we’re giving away) or this fire engine red Lanvin bag!  These bold colors will instantly take you from drab to fab this Fall!  Lanvin at Barneys New York.2. Geometric Shape – Modern and sleek, a square tote or clutch will keep you up to date.  We love this ‘Flash clutch’ from Sang A (a designer you will read more about later)!3. Patent – A bit of glossy shine is a surefire way to spark up an old outfit.  The Mulberry purple patent leather tote is surprisingly wearable and affordable $995.  Mulberry available at Net-a-Porter.  Anya Hindmarch Lautner and Lapnack navy patent bags are also fab for Fall!4. Metallic – Your silver Lanvin bag from last spring will still work through Fall, punch it up with a fuschia dresss and black tights and you’ll be ready to rock for Fall! 5. Exotic Skin – Crocs, anaconda/pythons, lizards  and ostrich, pick one or all, you can’t go wrong!  Frugal snobs can opt for leather embossed croc to get the same look.So remember:#1: Go Bold with Color!#2: Geometric Shapes will modernize your wardrobe.#3: Shine on with patent leather!#4: Keep last season’s metallic.#5: Go Exotic with ostrich or a lux Valextra croc!Bag Snob note: Remember, you do not have to buy new things each season to stay current.  Shop your own bag wardrobe (or your mother’s!) before you run out to the mall!  You will be surprised at how many unique finds you will come up with.   Vintage stores are also chock full of inexpensive treasures (especially crocodile bags from the ’50s and ’60s!), just make sure you check for stains and tears before purchasing.Lastly, it is not WHAT you carry but HOW you carry it!  Be confident and throw some sass in your attitude and you will be Absolutely Snob-ulous every season!

Marc by Marc Jacobs Dr. Q Delancy Tote

Ask and you shall receive.  We usually don’t indulge when people complain that the bags we recommend are too costly, I mean, we are afterall the Bag Snobs =)  But in the spirit of helping out students and our much appreciated educators, here is a bag I think everyone will agree makes for a great student, professor and work bag.  It has all the flair without the big ticket.  Don’t you just love the gathered detail on this supple and yummy leather?  The straps look short but can actually go over the shoulder.  This is not for the bike or public transport commuting student, which I am assuming our readers are way too high maintenance to be anyway.  It is 21.5″ X 19″ and has a 5″ gusset so you have plenty of room for books, notes and a change of clothes! (If you are Tina, you can fit an entire week’s worth of clothes in there.  She once showed up to my college apartment for a sleepover with an entire outfit in her Chanel 2.55).  I don’t want to hear any whining about the price of this bag, at $695 your budget surely will not bust.  Available at Net-a-Porter.

Rock it with this fab Miu Miu Double-breasted peacoat ($1,395) and a pair of hot pink Louboutins and you’ll be bright and happy for Fall! Miu Miu Large rounded tote $3,360 at NAP.

Jimmy Choo Marin Clutch Giveaway!

It is Fall and it’s that time of year where every bag comes in some sort of fur. I am not into the Indy but this one with grey mink and ostrich detail somehow makes it better. If you are a rap star (or Jennifer Lopez), this is the way to style it for the winter. The shaded grey mink is so divine! I like that instead of metal plates on the corners, this version has ostrich patches, it just makes a little more sense design wise. I know this is totally un-PC and we get a lot of flack for featuring these type of bags but remember, we only talk about the bags, we don’t make them. And do we encourage people to buy them? No, not this bag, at $7990 you can get yourself a nice Birkin!! Of course it will be leather and not an exotic. We still recommend though that if you want exotic, go with a skin and stay away from fur. You’ll get a lot of heads turning if that’s what you want but fur is just not that practical as a bag. Available at Gucci online.

Louis Vuitton Fall 2008

A peek of what’s in store for the Fall season from Louis Vuitton (if you don’t care, skip to the next entry); I am going to take the high road and only review the bags that did not make me cringe (you have eyes, go to see the scary ones for yourself).  I fear I have turned in to a major grouch when it comes to LV bags but then today I came upon my set of antique Louis Vuitton luggage my friend gifted me when I gave birth and it brought back all the love I used to have for this brand.  As you see, for Fall, the monogram and logo remain strong.  It’s the brand’s bread and butter, why change it and go all simple and logo-less a la Bottega Veneta right?  I mean how fun would that be?  Who would we make fun of if Marc Jacobs started offering understated and subtly chic bags?  We love Marc Jacobs because he shakes things up!  So, back to the bags.  Richly textured (looks like suede or could be fabric according to my source) with exotic detailing like python handles and ostrich trim, it is so lovely I can even overlook the monogram.  I am especially liking the winter white version with python shoulder strap, it looks so luxurious next to the white cashmere coat.  Is there anything more delicious than a white cashmere coat? I have to say, the Louis Vuitton ready to wear from MJ is exceptional this season.   I can’t wait to see the entire collection in person.  What do you think?  Will you ever be lured back to Louis Vuitton bags?

I had the pleasure of meeting Andrea Ciaraldi, Creative Director of Giorgio Armani, last week.  First at a fitting for Armani Privé Haute Couture (trust me, there is no experience like being fitted for Haute Couture, apex to apex) and later at a dinner at Fashionista Founder Heidi Dillon’s home.  Andrea is the ultimate charming Italian man.  He insisted I try on the Haute Couture sample pieces and when I came out he raved in his delicious Italian accent “You are amazing, why are you hiding under layers of wool and boxy jacket?  You must show this body off!  Most models don’t even fit into our sample sizes, you are perfect!”  Talk about ego boost, I almost ordered the pink beaded gown on the spot.  The cost of an average Haute Couture gown made to order, is a whooping six figures.  But considering it takes over 300 hours to apply the beading and beautiful details, it is well worth the price, isn’t it?  There are a mere 2,000 Haute Couture collectors worldwide, while most are over the age of 60, there is a growing group of young girls (20′s and 30′s) buying into the art of Haute Couture.   After this amazing experience, how can I go back to off the rack ready-to-wear?Anyone who has had the same experience will agree, it is an exquisite art that must be continued.  But seeing how haute couture artisans have dropped from 46,000 to only 4,500, it is up to the new generation of collectors to keep it going.  An article from the UK Telegraph stated that ten years ago, Couture collectors consisted mainly of Aristocrats and Texan wives but are now extending to young professionals and entrepreneurs (like my girlfriend who wishes to remain unnamed).  No longer the “trophy wives”, women who make their own money collect couture as men would fine art or say, an Aston Martin.Ciaraldi said Mr. Armani was inspired by the art of Japanese origami this season.  The laminated iguana jacket pictured above and on me below was meticulously pleated and stitched so that it will always keep the orgami folds.  The two dresses also have gorgeous pleated detailing as well hand beading which took hundreds of hours to complete.  It was such a thrill to try on Haute Couture pieces hot off the Paris runway!  As you can imagine, we are just as snobby about our clothes as we are about our bags, look for the launch of Couture Snob this summer! The oversized clutch I am holding is made of laminated iguana skin with hand made mignons (the “origami” detail).  It is one of the most unique bags I have seen.  The jacket is made of the same skin and is absolutely divine.  And did I mention I was measured for couture shoes as well?  Every curve of the foot is measured, ensuring a proper fit and ultimate comfort.Photo credit: Armani Privé Haute CoutureUPDATE- This entry was updated on Sunday, March 2nd.

Marcello de Cartier Bag

Left: Blue Petrol Cowhide in medium  Right: Pink glazed goat skin in smallIt is my job to review bags and I love it; from classic bags, trendy bags, funky bags, weird bags, obnoxious bags, and sometimes downright strange bags- you name it I’ve seen it.  So you can imagine how jaded one would get after staring at bags for hours day after day (over 850 days since Bag Snob began!) but not me, a great bag can still excite and delight me like nothing else!  I am, however, tired of gimmicky bags with sky high prices that aim to shock.  Which is why I am now obsessing over the Marcello de Cartier bag.  I was neutral when it was first introduced but am finding myself falling in love with its classic lines and impeccable craftsmanship.  I have always been a fan of Cartier watches and jewels but this is the first collection of bags that have captured my attention.  For Spring Cartier offers gorgeous shades of blues and pinks that will enchant even the most jaded of Bag Snobs.  I am glad I did not get the tobacco color last Fall because the blue petrol is absolutely gorgeous!  Available in three sizes (small 14″x7″ $1,000, medium 17″x8″ $1,220, large 21″x9″ $1,800) and very reasonably priced.

Jalda Bean Clutches

I was shopping around for clutches for a friend when I came across these absolutely fabulous clutch/totes from Jalda.  Many designers have tried the clutch to tote combo but none have succeeded as well as Jalda.  Using exotic skins such as stingray and python, Jalda has created little treasures for us to carry at night as a foldover clutch with magnetic closure that also converts to a tote with little bean shaped handles.  I am obsessed with the black and white stingray version, I know some of you will make the skunk comparison but I think it is tres chic and so perfect for the mod mood of fashion right now.  The the Metallic Python Bean Clutch is also fab and will be great for all the Fall parties.  And $460-$490 for exotic skin is not really that much of an investment so you might as well get both if you can’t decide!  At Saks Fifth Avenue.

FTBC Pucci Beach Bag

I am totally jealous that Kelly is lounging on a beach in Hawaii right now, as I sit and shiver in the cold front that has swept the country–30 degrees last night, which is so strange for this time of the year. What is going on? Hello Horton–can you hear us?!?!  As I await my own upcoming beach vacation, I’ve discovered yet another guilt-free splurge. Net-a-Porter and Pucci have teamed up to benefit FTBC (Fashion Targets Breast Cancer) once again with a juicy citrus-hued beach bag! Purchasing this limited-edition Pucci beach bag directly supports Fashion Targets Breast Cancer WORLDWIDE in the battle to combat breast cancer. All net proceeds will be donated to FTBC, where they will benefit local breast cancer charities around the world in support of the on-going global campaign to find a cure. Now I just have to find a guilt-free excuse for the fabulous Hermes bikini and pink lizard sandals I saw the other day…Pucci FTBC Beach Bag is $795 at NAP.

Hermes Scarf Knotting Tips and Tricks Part Two

I meant to post this last week but with our server down for two days, I completely forgot!  So here it is, my favorite ways to tie and knot scarves on bags.  The blue jean birkin above is tied with a limited edition cotton Hermes scarf.  I found that the cotton ones were easiest to work with but I like the way the silk scarves hang better.  The style above may be done by folding your scarf diagonally (2 inch thickness), then tie a knot on the handle– keeping one side four inches longer than the other, pull through a single bow instead of two and voila, instant chic-ness.  See more styles after the jump!I folded the silk scarf above straight across (2 inch thickness), tied a knot, left one side a couple of inches longer, and pulled through a single bow as the one above.  This is nice for the Lindy because it’s a shorter bag and you don’t want too long of ends dangling about. For days when I’m feeling girly and silly, I tie a regular double bow with a twilly scarf.  I love twilly scarves for bags because they’re already the perfect width and easy to tie.  The right side is a single bow achieved with the same instructions above.I generally do not tie any scarves on my exotic birkins because why compete with the beautiful details in croc and ostrich with a hundred dollar scarf!?!?  But I tied this on to show you how great an orange bag looks with a pink multi colored scarf.  I love contrasting colors, pink and orange really looks fantastic together! The same may be achieved with a Kelly bag (I didn’t have time to do the Kelly photos but will load it up another time) or any other bags in your closet!  You can pull out an outdated bag, throw on a scarf in the color of the season, and you’ll look stylish and current!  And it doesn’t have to be an Hermes scarf, either.  Any scarf will do, I am just an Hermes addict.

Tufi Duek “Helena” Weekender Tote

It looks like Bag Snobs are also the jet setter types because we have received a ton of emails asking for a good travel tote.  It is imperative that while running through airports and boarding ships we have a chic travel companion that can keep all our goodies in place.  The thing is, the poor bag take such a beating that it is downright sad to look at your brand new bag looking like road kill when you get home.  My very light colored teal green Tod’s softie is now laying at my foot looking pretty shabby after only one flight (I shove it under the seat and give it several good kicks to keep it there throughout the flight, it also got thrown in and out of the car and dragged through security x-ray).  The thing to do is get a bag that will take that wear and tear but also make sure it is cheap enough so that you don’t experience too much heartache.  This tote is the answer, it is surprisingly chic and the plum leather with brown suede trim is truly divine.  This will take a beating and look better for it, which is exactly what is called for!  It has all the essential organizational pockets inside and measures 21″ x 20″ making it appropriately deemed “oversized”.  The Tufi Duek ‘Helena’ oversized tote is full price at $550 but is only $330 on Bluefly.  Gotta love Bluefly!!

Chloe Joan Python Tote, or Top?

This is officially rag on Chloe week.  Please help me out here because I am not sure what you’re supposed to do with the Joan Python from Chloe, carry it or wear it?   At first I thought it was a tube top or dress but then quickly and unfortunately realized it is a bag.  I actually have a very clever idea (I know, I am full of clever ideas).  Slash the bottom of the bag and wear it as a sexy tube top a la Carrie Bradshaw and rock it with skinny jeans and a pair of stiletto heels!  I am serious, let’s dissect this thing apart– the useless belt across the middle?  Perfect to cinch under your chest for that babydoll look (of course it would be best if you are flat chested but a little cleavage never hurt anybody so even if you are ample it will work).  The long handle will also make a great halter strap!.  Do you know how expensive python clothes are?  $2940 is an outrageous price for such an ugly bag but as a sexy python top?  It’s a steal.  See, I can find practical use for the most ridiculous of things.  Chloe Joan python bag

I am in a disco mood because I have been going out lately and discovered that it still can be fun if you’re with the right people and stick to Grey Goose and soda (no colorful and sugary cocktails and no mixing)!  Maybe I have been hormonal for the last 4 years and thought it was my age making me so crotchety but I am feeling quite frisky these days.  And with this new spring in my step, I am in need of this total disco bag for nights out with a fun party dress.  It is made of the metallic mesh like those halters from the 70′s.  I was a decade too late to party at Studio 54 (plus I don’t and never have done drugs so I wouldn’t have been happy there) but if you can time travel, you would bring down the house with this bracelet clutch!  The bracelet is removable if you need a clutch for a more serious occasion but what is great is that the bracelet is a fabulous cuff all by itself.  A definite 2-for-1 deal here because that cuff will run you a good $400 by itself.  At Net a Porter for $1165.

Smythson Maze Clutch

I have always been a fan of the deco period, not only am I building a new home with a 1920′s Parisian art deco flair, I collect vintage art deco jewelry (Fred Leighton has the best stock), and am on constant lookout for bags with a structured deco feel. I stayed in the Linley Suite at the Claridges during my trip to London– which was elegantly decorated in fabulous art deco decor by Viscount David Linley– and it made me want to move to London and live at the heavenly Claridges! But back to earth, I discovered the Maze clutch at the Smythson store on Rodeo 2 when Kelly and I had lunch at the Daily Grill (an institution in LA!). We had a glass of wine and went shopping, not so smart but oh so fun! She bought an adorable photo frame key ring for a friend while I checked out the jewelry boxes – so insanely fabulous I can not tell you how much I want one! Then I saw these Maze clutches, so clean in structure and simple in design it made me want to take it home. The suede contrast is lovely in its subtlety yet it makes the bag. There are 4 colors to choose from but I love the plummy version above right best– it’s a quick and inexpensive way to update your Fall wardrobe instantly in the very berry trend (and if you hold it upside down, it looks like a T monogram– made just for me!  $975.

Bottega Veneta Spring 2008 Bags

I love Bottega bags but it is the ash-gray (marmo) crocodile wedges (by special order only-$3,600) that has captured my attention for Spring.  I tried on a pair at the trunk show and could not stop thinking about them!  The woven crocodile texture is amazing and the crocodile wedge heel is pure decadence!  You can get the python wedges (antelope color pictured below) for $1,370 or the woven leather for $1,100 if you can not justify a pair of shoes that cost almost 4k.There were a few great bags as well, a bit too big for my taste but surprisingly lightweight and functional.  The python bag above is $4,100 and comes in color combinations of grey-ciment/rock and camel-antilope/noce.  The bag in person is really soft and slouchy, with whimsical details like the two deep side pockets that resemble coin purses with discreet pull tab.  This is something I would use as a travel bag and because it is so lightweight, I’d be able to load it up without worry.  Bottega has the softest python and anaconda skins I have ever felt, my anaconda bag has taken a serious beating (my son got water all over it but the scales are still nice and smooth!).  The expandable woven bag ($3,650) on the right is a new silhouette that I am on the fence about.  I like the idea but “bowling” comes to mind when I look at it.  Call Jasenka at Bottega Veneta for further details!  214-265-0136Bottega bags also available at Saks Fifth Avenue and Neiman Marcus.Photos courtesy of Bottega Veneta

Anya Hindmarch Perriand Mirror Tote

There is something so great about this mirror bag from Anya Hindmarch, the sleek lines and simplicity really lends itself to the flashy bling bling super shine.  But what I really love is that Anya’s bags are always so easy to use, totally functional with pockets, zips, compartments inside and out.  No need to suffer for style, you know there are those amazing bags you love but can’t use everyday because you can’t ever find your keys or phone and everything just sloshes around on the bottom and gets all scrunched up.  I find that when I use my practical everyday bag, I won’t switch it out for a week.  But my all style and no function bags, I use for a day and the next day I grab the user friendly one again.  I just want one bag that is fabulous beyond belief AND has all the features I need to avoid the frustrations of constantly digging around.  Outer pockets!!!  Please!!!  We don’t always practice function over fashion but how is it that I have so many bags but none are exactly perfect?  Just sheer mathematics should ensure that at least one of my bags fit all my criteria.  I guess if this mythical bag existed, we would all stop buying bags.  Ha, NOT!!  But still, I would like a bag that has everything and this one is close to being there.  Only if it were in some sort of exotic and really really light weight.  At Net-a-Porter for $1150.

Tom Ford at Fashion Week

Kelly and I are off to Fashion Week for the week and will be blogging from New York.  Please bear with us if we do not post as regularly (in between party hopping we are hoping to get lots of work done!).  We will be bringing you coverage both from the runway and backstage (Vera Wang, Diane von Furstenberg, Carolina Herrera, Oscar, just to name a few!  Plus interviews with Bobbi Brown, Nars, and Orlando Pita!)  We’re also visiting major bag designers (think Zac and Anya) so we can give you sneak previews of what’s to come for Fall 2008.  You’ll get to see the excitement of Fashion Week firsthand here at Bag Snob so stay tuned!

OK, so he wasn’t actually at anything Fashion Week related, we saw him at dinner at Waverly Inn.  He was just walking out as we were going in and Tina was wearing a coat from his last collection at YSL so he agreed to pose for a quick picture.  He was very nice and told Tina the coat looked great on her.  We’ve seen Ashley Olsen, Anne Hathaway, Chloe Sevigny, Rachel Zoe (ew), Angie Harmon and I can’t even remember who else but it was Tom Ford that got Tina excited like a giddy little girl.
