Bottega Veneta Butterfly Clutch

Hello Spring! It is time to get your spring time clutch. Every season requires a clutch and what more appropriate for the season than a beloved butterfly on our favorite Bottega pyramid clutch in the ultimate of neutrals, bone. I love this color, I considered getting this color in another bag because it is just so perfectly neutral but crisp and surprisingly hides dirt fairly well (I said fairly well, not super well so you still have to be careful). The stark Bottega white is totally out for me, it is a bit binding because it is so white and all I can think about is the yellowish dirt that will appear on the handle where your little grubby hands go. I love that the butterfly is big and spans the entire bag but it is on the back. This clutch is the perfect size for day because it has girth to hold your entire wallet, phone and a camera. The only thing I would think twice about though is the difficulty in holding this clutch. Your hand has to grab the bottom and it is not flat so doesn’t go under your arms comfortably. You also can’t told it from the top by pinching it with your fingers because it is too thick. This was a problem for me but other than that, it’s great! =) At Net a Porter for $770.

Chanel Classic Flap Python

Alber Elbaz is so amazing, just when I was getting tired of the Kentucky and pouchettes he comes out with a Spring line that is fresh, interesting and gorgeous! This Noanne frame is the coolest thing, you have to see this to appreciate how much style and substance it has. There is an almost industrial feel to it but it is very young and hip. It is definitely a trend bag but so much fun that it might be worth getting just this one for the season. And it has to be in white, it comes in black and a really pretty blue, but for this bag it has to be white, the other just doesn’t have the right feel. It is kind of big at 14″ x 13.5″ but it is what gives it the chunky, clunky coolness. The only problem is the short 7″ drop on the handle – the hardware on top jabs into your underarm and can even pinch you. But this bag is meant to be on the arm so keep it away from your soft delicates. But don’t worry, the bag open and closes very easily and does not involve what looks like a complicated closure. At Barneys for $2,865.

I have been looking for a Chanel exotic for a while now and living in California does not help because python is illegal here.  And the really strange thing is, the Rodeo Dr. boutique is really lacking in its bag selection.  So when I went to Las Vegas I knew I had to stop in the Bellagio store to see what is up.  And besides, my husband still didn’t get me a birthday gift yet, a whole month later.  They have by far the best selection of bags I’ve seen and lots and lots of exotics to choose from.  As soon as I walked in I spotted this baby of mine on the display table.   I shopped around feigning interest in other bags but I knew I was taking this python home with me =)  This is truly the one for me.  This investment piece has all the requirements of one, the ultimately classic flap bag, the good size, neutral color but still shows the skin beautifully and well, it’s a Chanel.  I thought twice about the tassel (which is not removable) but it adds the youthfulness I want and when it’s on the movement really draws attention!  It is a chain bag, which is usually against policy but they are really thin and light and stay on.  But the main reason for choosing the chain is that it is the embodiment of a classic Chanel bag, so I had to do it.  This color is a soft buttery yellow and is so beautiful, creamy and dreamy – it is called Uni which happens to be my favorite food so it’s also yummy!  It also comes in black, but black python is pointless, it just looks like a textured leather bag.  This extraordinary bag is $3450, which I think is totally reasonable.  Remember the White Caviar Tote I was in love with?  That is $3875, hello it doesn’t take a financial wiz to know what is the better investment.  Call Lena at the Bellagio store at 702-765-5505 to inquire.  Thanks Honey for the best birthday gift ever!

Fiona Kotur – International Icon of Style

Fiona Kotur’s story embodies what I love about women! It makes me proud, and I am in constant awe of the versatility, adaptability, and will of our gender. Fiona moved to Hong Kong in 2002, with her husband, whose finance position took him there. Can’t feel sorry for her — Hong Kong is one of the greatest cities in the world! And obviously Fiona would agree with me as she fully immersed herself in the diverse and exciting cultural clashes of the city. She comes from a design background, having worked for Ralph Lauren and Gap, so when long-time friend, Tory Burch, needed help launching her line, Fiona sourced materials for her in Hong Kong and China. That was the beginning of Kotur as Fiona found and bought a warehouse full of vintage 60s brocade that ended up being the materials for her first collection. She not only made the best of her situation, but she took advantage of what life had to offer and created her own ideal world.Unlike many designers who manufacture in China, she is proud of that fact. She has an extreme advantage of being close to her factories to keep a close eye, but she feels that China still has traditional craftsman and artisans, who are well suited for her collections. Her manufacturers are in Dongguan, which is known for producing some of the world’s most high-end luxury lines. You can easily see from her line that inspiration comes from someone who is truly international. She is well traveled and has artistic genes, (her mother was a painter and couture designer in Paris) all of which show in her bags with influences ranging from the art deco era, to rich textiles and exotic ornamentations. Her celebrity clientele includes Sienna Miller, Mischa Barton, Tilda Swinton, Drew Barrymore, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Jacquetta Wheeler. Her current spring line has such a wide range, including her famous brocade clutches, minaudieres (in Swarovski crystal, snakeskin, and python) as well as handbags like her recently popular Wallace handbag, which comes in textured leather and a natural python. She does not limit her imagination with the materials, which run the spectrum from fabulous exotics like shagreen, python, haircalf and snakeskin to metals, shells, lucite, and rattan. Wow! How does she keep it all straight?Sibal Ayers Snakeskin Bag $798; Grand Pereire Vintage Brocade $258

Oh the line between love and hate is truly very very thin. My love for YSL just suddenly got crushed when I got a glimpse of what’s to come for Fall 2008. This “32″ bag is good practical bag, it is 12″ x 12″ and has 5 interior compartments! Great! Too bad it has been badly scarred. The “Y” design on the bag looks like branding. Yes, we know leather comes from cows but do you really need to be that obtuse about it? How terrible! It is especially odd because the 3 lines of the Y just kind of sits there randomly. Even without the scarring, the bag is a boring ole bowler style. When I said I wanted excitement, I didn’t mean the tortured kind. It is seen here with croco embossed nubuck in English Pink (ok, fine, the color is delightful) for $1995. It will also be available in black and brown super supple soft leather for $1895 and an ostrich for $5495 in a beige-y color called “Pear”. I am sure this will be a huge seller for them because of non-logo logo and because this bag is so easy to use. You will see it a few times and get used to it but keep in mind how you first felt about it when you saw it. I know I will even if they make it in some to die for color I can’t live without. Just in case though, I better make a note because I do get weak when it comes to YSL.

Eco-Chic alert: Kooba Green Tote

I have done my part by purchasing almost every ‘Green’ bag out there and I use them dutifully at stores, but I have never found one that was truly “chic”. Eco– yes, chic– no. Most look like potato sacks and though we feel good and smug about ourselves when we carry one (as we sneer at those still using plastic bags), we don’t feel stylish. But finally, someone has done it right! Kooba’s green tote is the BEST eco-chic bag EVER! Not only is it made of organic cotton canvas, it has a very cool recycled metallic cork trim which gives the unbleached cotton just the touch of glam it so needs. How creative is that!?!? This giant tote is 14″ x 18″ x 6.5″, perfect for my beach vacations and for stuffing it full of groceries. Available in Natural and Pale Olive. Exclusively for Barneys Green for $245, okay so it’s not $35 like the rest of them but hey, you get what you pay for and this is absolutely Snob worthy!!!What do you think of Eco Chic bags? Snob or Slob? Eco Chic Bags: Snob or Slob?

Happy Memorial Day– Sales!!!

My YSL vintage Haute Couture Gown circa 1972 purchased from Decades– one of my prized posessions.I was so saddened to hear of the death of Yves Saint Laurent and would like to take a moment to reflect on one of the most influential designers of the 20th century. The man who put women in sexy smoking jackets, freeing them from poufy skirts of the ’50s and whom coined “effortlessly chic” with his revolutionary ready to wear designs (he is often referred to as “The Godfather” of RTW) will be missed by many. Last month we had the honor of hosting an event with Lou Lou de la Falaise, his muse of over three decades and who inspired the YSL smoking jacket, and had a lovely conversation with her about YSL. His legacy will no doubt continue on through the name he leaves behind.

Lanvin Satin Papilotte Shopper and Pochette

Grandma is trying to convince us to move to Alabama. I told her I need to go to NY once a week so she is looking into a private plane for us. Stay tuned… this could become a real life City Slicker story. In the meantime, I have not lost touch with reality. Say you have a long day out, shopping, running errands, meetings, whatever and in the evening you are meeting friends for dinner. So here is what you do. You get this Lanvin shopper and throw the pochette in there. It is the perfect solution for long days when you have too much stuff with you but for each activity you only need a portion of it. You keep the shopper in the car (sorry city girls) and just take the pochette with you when you run in and out of stores. Or for your meeting, you take the whole shopper with you. There is no reason to match the 2 since you will not be using them at the same time. The shopper in the bronze is the perfect day color that will go with most things and of course the anthracite pochette is your all around go-to clutch. This shopper is as cute as can be and LIGHT!! The drawstring closure allows you to change the shape and look as you wish. The foldover clutch is one of the few that actually works perfectly. In satin, it folds flat and is easier to manage. The navy stripe with the anthracite is super casual chic. Pop Satin Pochette is $995 and Papilotte Satin Shopper is $1390, both at Barneys New York.

Sergio Rossi Fall 2008 Bags

We’ve been known to diss shoe designers when their forays into bag design comes up short but in the case of Sergio Rossi designer Edmundo Castillo– the results are spectacular!  I’ve always adored Sergio Rossi signature sky high heels but never gave their bags a thought (to be honest, I didn’t even know the brand had bags!) until a very clever intern at Sergio Rossi emailed us about stumbling into a bag closet at the SR headquarters in New York!  Kelly and I were immediately intrigued and asked for look books, pronto– and received them via Fed ex yesterday.   It is always exciting to discover new bag designs and knowing the quality of Sergio Rossi shoes, I am expecting the bags to be just as meticulous.  I have not seen these in person yet but hope to see samples very soon!  I predict the duffel bag (shown above) will become the line’s signature.  This periwinkle crocodile version is to die.  Front pocket bags are nothing new but with the subtle details in the flap and twisted handle plus the unusual colors, Sergio Rossi has made it unique and interesting.I especially love the many clutches in the line.  They are not only sleek and elegant, they open to a very functional and well organized interior.  How often do you open a clutch only to have your money fall out or worse, your license?  Not to worry, these clutches have built in slots for your credit cards and license plus a zippered compartment for cash or lip gloss!   There are also fabulous big bags, made of patent and exotic skin in both slouchy and structured shapes.  I am still waiting on prices for the bags as they are brand new but could not wait to share these photos with you!  Stay tuned for the availability and pricing list!  Or go to Sergio Rossi website for more details.Love the shade of this patent leather version.  It’s vibrant and bright, just the answer to a dreary winter day!I am really into this clutch.  The lines are modern and simple but the color contrast of velvet and patent gives it an edgy appeal.  This would work with everything in my closet! The slouchy boho chic style is urban chic, love the subtle sheen of the patent skin.  Very unusual and ambitious to make patent in a soft shape but I love it!I am usually not one to love zippers all over my bags but this python zippered hobo is an exceptionally well crafted bag.  The zippers are not merely for aesthetic purposes, each have a function.  The side zipper that goes around the entire bag will allow you to compact or expand according to your needs, it can be a flat messenger type bag or a big roomy bag– brilliant!

Lanvin Gold Metallic Hobo

Sorry about the late story, I am having issues with bugs that you do NOT want to know about. Anyhoo, I told you I was in a disco mood – everything gold and shiny is catching my fancy these days. I know the functionality of this bag breaks all my rules, but I love the gold with the black thick ribbon straps. There is something shouting out at me, I mean gold lamĆ© is so “out” that it is “in” (although this is gold leather but has that lamĆ© look), or maybe the round belly of the bag is comforting to me and the glam makes me feel like I can be comfy yet sassy. Again the hobo shape is coming strong for Fall but instead of boho this is glam-ho! Whatever it is, I am loving Lanvin and this bag is so me right now!! At Browns Fashion for $2840.

Poor Minnie Mouse, her bow was stolen to make this clutch. And what a shame too because it is a sad excuse for a clutch at that. Other than looking like a ridiculous cartoon character, how the heck do you use this thing? Unless you just need to carry scarves with you, what can you possibly fit in there that can crumple in half like that? To make matters worse, I don’t think the center of the bow unravels so you have to get the zipper to unzip under it. And if you think there is some saving grace to this bag, there is not – to add insult to injury, this comes with a shoulder strap so you can really look like a 3 year old with a toy but you pay full adult price at $1095. I truly cannot believe this has a Valentino label on it, it is not only ill-conceived, it is poorly made. It looks like the result of fidgety hands while on a shrinks couch. At Neiman Marcus.

My Net-a-Porter Sales Purchases

Bottega Veneta Foldover Pouchette $580, now $406; Marni Large Balloon $1620, now $1215So far the Fall bags have either been too pricey or not yet available to me so I have to go back to sale shopping. I thought I was done with sales, usually extra money is reserved for June so that I can take advantage of all the savings (why does this only make sense to women?) but I’m finding myself with nothing to buy for the money earmarked for July and it’s already the 29th! Well, good thing I did because now I can pick up these 2 bags that have been shelved in hopes of finding better bags later in the season but were then forgotten. This is like finding cash in the pocket of a coat you haven’t worn in a long time! Cuz now these bags are super cheap and they are not those bags you buy because they seem like a bargain but then you end up not using them because they only looked good “for the price”. These are essential pieces that I have been wanting and needing! The Bottega Veneta is easy, who can’t use a little bag like that? But the Marni is the one I have been pining for! I know, I feel like a fraud because after all that gushing over the Balloon, I still don’t have one!!! Well, now I do =) There are still a lot of great bags but please stay clear of those that look “good for the price” like the Fendi Patchwork tote. Yikes! It would have to be free to look good for the price. Bottega Veneta Foldover Pouchette, $406 and Marni Large Balloon $1215 at Net-a-Porter.

Pierre Hardy Man Tote

One of our faithful readers, Sam, emailed us to share his most recent obsessive purchase. He knew our love of Pierre Hardy so he was pandering a bit but who cares, I agree he got himself a bag that makes men and women alike salivate so I had to pass it along. I am trusting Sam’s judgement that this bag looks better in person because it is slouchier and not so structured but I don’t have to totally rely on him because I know Pierre leather is always buttery soft. For women, sure this is not the most sexy or overwhelming bag but as a lap top / work bag – what could be more sultry? And for men, whenever you choose, it would be the same. Not that I am in the working mood being that I am on Martha’s Vineyard but I am going to get this bag for the new Mac Air that I really really want to get. I am sick of having to take 2 bags with me when I have my MacBook with me and if I am schlelpping around town with a computer, I am in serious work mode and as far as work bags go, this is the most slick and stylish you can get. My guy friends around me unanimously voiced their dissent for this bag but I totally disagree – this bag has the right man waiting for it to pick it up and give it some love. Available for $1300 at the Pierre Hardy boutique in Paris or Barneys New York, check the closet one to you to see if they have it.

Nancy Gonzalez Flat Croc Clutch

I know you are going to laugh at my schizo-ness but I saw these clutches and all thoughts of black bags have vanished from my mind! What was I thinking? How can I give up such luscious juiciness– for widow black!?!? One look at the skittle happy colors and I’m hooked back. Nancy Gonzalez is killing me with bag after fabulous bag and making me lose my mind, I have been emailing their office daily and driving them insane with my incessant questions– luckily Santiago Gonzalez (Nancy’s son) is a friend so they tolerate me over there. Anywho, back to these lovelies, the flat croc clutches are oversized at 13.5″, not ginormous but not wimpy either. It’s just the right size to wear with, like, everything. Really, I mean it. What can’t you wear with one of these babies? I can’t think of single thing. I want it in green, fuschia, and purple. Okay, I want them all. What can I say, a greedy heart is hard to satiate so why even try? Nancy Gonzalez croc clutches $2,300

Congratulations to Sally A from New York, she is our lucky winner of this week’s pop quiz. The bag is Lockheart’s Zahara tote. The multi-pocket bag is full of function and has way more edge than you would expect from Lockheart. It is $695, call Lockheart directly at 800-783-2160 to order.

Restaurant Bag Bassinet

My favorite restaurant in Taiwan is Ding Tai Fung, a specialty restaurant that serves steamed dumplings that are without debate the best in the world. The original is in a really old and not so nice building but now that they have branched out, their newest restaurant is super swanky and ultra nice, and as if I needed more incentive to love this place, they now provide a table side bassinets for your precious bags! They even bring a cloth napkin to cover the bassinet to keep spills and splashes from soiling your bag. Hanging your bag on your chair (that is, if you even can) puts it in danger of being knocked off by passers by and / or having food spilled on it, not to mention having it stolen if you are not watching it intently the entire time. Even the hooks under the table is not always the best solution, some bag handles don’t fit and having it dangle next to your leg is not exactly relaxing and comfortable. And forget about putting it on the floor, yuck! And for your jackets that you drape over the back of your seat, they protect that too with a chair back cover. Now that is good, considerate service with the yummiest meal to boot! Now the question is, how do we get all restaurants to provide these?By the way, that is my Tod’s softy in teal sleeping sweetly in there. It is the BEST travel bag especially with 2 kids in tow. I have completely destroyed it and will now need to have it conditioned. If you need a hold-all that is ultra comfortable, this is it.

Oscar de la Renta Pre-Fall 2009

Oscar de la Renta wants us to get excited again about fashion. And excited I am! Look at these bags! A perfect tote for all seasons and reasons; beckoning in glimmering metallic python and sunny yellow leather with large outer pockets to hold my iPhone, keys and whatever I need to access quickly (small plastic Tranformer figurines for example). And the clutches, a fresh take on Oscar classics. Thank you thank you Oscar, for doing what you always do! Beautiful clothes , gorgeous bags, and this is only Pre-Fall! I can’t wait to see what the Master has up his sleeve for Fall. Jump for more fabulous bags from Oscar de la Renta.A fabulous hobo style with woven leather strap, you get the chic look of chains without the damage to the shoulders. Simple and understated daily bag. Are those studs I detect on the cuff of this jacket? Amazing!Quirky and fun, this little clutch will bring life to any stale bag wardrobe! I love how the background is dark blue to set off the metallic details. Distressed leather plays a large role for the season, the hardware is unusual but wonder how it opens. Can’t wait to check out the samples at the showroom!

More Miu Miu! The Studded Tote

I know I know, enough of the studs but this is different from the other stud bags we’re coveting of late. This is round button-like studs, so you see– different! Plus it’s only $1,295, almost half the cost of other studded bags right now. It’s a gigantic thing at 16″x11″ but the exaggerated studs are so huge it’d look bizarre on a little bag. I love the tiny chain details on the handles, so like Miu Miu to put chains where no one else would think of. There is one catch, it’s extremely heavy– I picked it up and almost fell over. So proceed with caution and only if you have strong biceps.

The best part about the Oscars is watching Red Carpet action, I can’t wait to see what fabulous clutches the stars bring out! I’ve confirmed that the following celebs will be carrying VBH clutches– Amy Adams, Tina Fey and Naomi Watts! (I was going to carry VBH as well, but am sick in bed waaaaaah!) Amy Adams is seen in the VBH Ballerina Clutch in Dark Red Satin above.Check for the latest red carpet fashion!Check for Oscar Beauty!

Chanel Spring/Summer 2009 Act II

Karl Lagerfeld shot the latest catalog for the House of Chanel starring Jerry Hall and a much much younger guy. I’m all for the younger man/older woman thing but the male model they chose looks almost underage but hey– not judging! The Chanel Upside down bag ($2,675) in patent white leather is fun and sure to be a collector’s item but I’d feel, well, upside down carrying it. I already have the 2.55 in white patent so no need to repeat. The Chanel 2.55 ($3,295) in tie dye pink lambskin, however, is super fabulous! I love the ombre shades of pale pink; it’s subtle, sexy and very youthful. I think I’ve found my summer bag! I always invest in Chanel bags, no matter the economic situation; they are timelessly chic.Call Alexis at 214-520-1055 to order!(Jump to see the catalog!)Call me a dirty old lady but this boy looks 16, no? Again, not judging! Just making an observation. The catalogue is inspired by the novel “Cheri” by French Author Colette. The medium shopper ($2,625) is a great way to get the black/white ’80s graphic trend while staying classic.

Derek Lam’s Hollywood Moment: The Romina Sac

One of the hottest designers of the moment in Hollywood is undoubtedly Derek Lam. His latest arm candy, the Romina sac and the Catia, have been seen on A-lister Gwyneth Paltrow and young starlet Rachel Bilson and is getting lots of paparazzi attention! We all need a big tote in our busy lives– the Romina is fabulous and functional with chain detail, side flap pockets (like pants!) and Derek’s signature tassels. It’s also a lot lighter than his previous efforts due to the silk lining instead of heavy suede. Derek Lam Romina Bag is 14″x15.5″ in size and available in beige or grey for $1,695 here I know it’s time for lighter shade bags but the gray is a fab alternative to black for summer– plus it will take you through fall/winter effortlessly. If you’re in NYC, head over to the Derek Lam boutique–212.966.1616. Jump for more photos!Gwyneth Paltrow in the Romina SacRachel Bilson in the Catia bag.Photos courtesy of Derek Lam press office.

Miu Miu Cut Out Basket: Snob, Slob or for the Fruits

Cantaloupe for $1! Apples for $3! This is what I want to shout when I see Miu Miu‘s Cut Out Basket. It looks like it was inspired by ladies in Asia who shop for fresh fruits daily. You can see them out each morning before it gets hot; walking leisurely while chatting and laughing (sometimes carrying parasols). The only difference is their basket is made of plastic and cost $5.Guess how much this one is? £484GBP/$696 USD. (And no, this is not an April Fool’s Joke!) Okay so it’s made of patent leather instead of plastic but still, it is way expensive even if you want to use it for a fun beach bag to hold you child’ toys in. Not a bad idea to use for the beach, actually. No sand will stick inside as it will all fall through the cracks. Miu Miu Cut out Basket Bag What do you think? Snob, Slob, or for the Fruits?

The newlywed showed off her fabulous purple ostrich hobo this week in NYC before taking off for Costa Rica for a 2nd wedding celebration. I am obsessing over this bag– the color is amazing and I love a good hobo shape to slouch around with. I’m trying to figure out what brand this is. Anyone have an idea? I thought Bottega at first but can’t confirm.Happy weekend all! I’m on my way to do a little retail therapy myself

Louis Vuitton Sued for “Fraudulent Art”

Found this very interesting read over at NY Mag blog about a man who spent thousands on Louis Vuitton prints made of the same material used for its Murakami bags (not sure what rock he’s been living under but clearly he should have consulted The Bag Snob before making his purchase). According to the article the investor, Clint Arthur, alleges that “Vuitton did not disclose that the prints were made from scraps and had full intent to deceive their customers”. The case will go to court next week. I can’t wait to hear the outcome. If he wins, he could receive 12 million in damages!?!? he could have saved thousands and bought a bag ready made and put it in a glass case. So, let’s discuss. I’ll go first. I think this is a frivolous lawsuit. Anyone can put a scrap of leather in a frame and call it art, if you’re not savvy enough to do your research before purchasing, you have only yourself to blame. Now, your turn. What do you think, does this Arthur guy deserve $12 million in damages against Louis Vuitton?Photo source: Louis Vuitton

Lebanon “Prison Chic” Bags

I posted this article after reading it from BBC and wanted to share it with you in its entirety; BBC was cited as the source with link to the article (translated by BBC from a Lebanese newspaper) but perhaps some of you mistook it as an article I wrote. If you want to read this amazing story about women empowering other women– go to BBC here. Reprint of entire article also after the jump.Actress Catherine Deneuve was recently pictured on the front pageof a Lebanese newspaper wearing a black dress and carrying a matchinghandbag with the Arabic words “Where is my heart?” embroidered on it.The handbag provoked a great deal of interest, not just because ofthe Arabic embroidery, but also because it was made by women who hadserved time in Lebanese jails. The bags are thebrainchild of Sarah Beydoun, who says Miss Deneuve’s wardrobe designerfirst visited the factory with the black dress and asked for a matchinghandbag. A few days later Catherine Deneuve took a trip to the factory and picked out the bag herself. Vulnerable womenThe story began a few years ago when Sarah was a student in Beirut writing a thesis on vulnerable women including prisoners. Through a women’s social centre, Sarah spent some time with former prisoners seeking a new life after release from jail. When she completed her thesis, she thought of a way to help them. (Jump for more!)She began by employing five inmates in Baabda Female Prison to make bracelets. Then they began to embroider pieces of cloth which were turned into handbags. After the first lot of 12 handbags were sold to great acclaim, demand increased and the workforce was expanded to 40 female prisoners.Sarah would visit the prison three times a week with a supply of cloth and beads. She would return later to receive the finished pieces to be turned into handbags.Former inmates also work for her company, which is called Sarah’s Bag, as a way to make a fresh start.Royal fanCatherine Deneuve is not the first celebrity to acquire a Sarah’s Bag bag. Queen Rania of Jordan has also been spotted with one. Afriend of Queen Rania’s had visited the factory to buy her a gift andasked Sarah to put a slip of paper inside the handbag explaining thatit had been made by prisoners. At the time, Sarah’s handbags were not labelled because the project was in its infancy. Beydoun hit headlines with a statement of pride about her company’s workQueen Rania’s bag bore the popular Arabicsaying “Determination comes from those who are determined” and shecarried it at the wedding of the crown prince of Spain. Queen Rania’s dress was by Chanel, but no mention was made of her handbag whose manufacturer was not known at the time. Sarah contacted the Queen’s office and asked for a copy of the picture. Shethen sent it to the media with a statement describing the way herhandbags were made, adding the words: “We are proud, and hope that youare too”. Many newspapers and magazines published the statement and interviewed Sarah about her project. Today it is an institution. Recently, handbags made by female prisoners and displaying pictures ofcelebrities including the legendary Egyptian singer Um Kulthoom wereput on display at a ceremony celebrating outstanding Arab femalesingers. In the beginning, just a few handbags weremade per day. Today, there are dozens and they are sold not only inBeirut but across the Arab and the wider world.

Balenciaga Brilliant Pouchette Bague

Is there another brand cooler than Balenciaga? (Balmain is close behind but Christopher Decarnin has yet to prove he’s worthy of the outrageous prices and that he’s more than a one season wonder!). The Brilliant Pouchette Bague Black Lizard showcases everything I love about Balenciaga under Nicholas Ghesquiere– he pushes the envelope yet manages to retain the essence of the brand. The two gusset flap front with studded hardware is edgy urban but in classic lizard– it remains tasteful. I can just picture Carine Roitfeld with this, she eschews large bags and prefers little clutches. This one is kind of an odd size at 6″ x 6.5″ x 1.5″ but that’s part of its charm! The squareness has a vintage-y retro feel to it that I love. $2,675.00 at Barneys New York.Tell me, do you love Balenciaga, too?

I love the swagger of stylish, hip girls in their 20′s. They exude a carefree independence that boosts their confidence. And for the exceptional few, these girls use moderate luxury bags like Kooba and make them look like a million bucks. And with good reason, Kooba knows how to compliment this girl with bags that are just as carefree and independent as their spirit. This hobo with the giant loose bow (it’s more of a knot but has that bow feel) is not so polished and serious and allows a lot of room for personal character. There is no need to spend a ton of money when you’ve got it all going on! Easy for everyday with the thick comfy strap and wide gusset for a roomy interior. This lilac is soft and pretty but it also comes in white which is just as fabulous. At Kooba for $575.

Marc by Marc Jacobs Classic Hobo

There have been a lot of Frugal Snob options lately that really are fantastic. OK, this may not be the most exciting bag, but for the price, $438, you get a nice designer label and soft supple leather in beautiful dreamy colors. The double strap adds the touch of interest on an otherwise “classic hobo” as the name suggests. You have to see it on otherwise the bag collapses into a scrunch, like the taupey one called “Pebble” seen here. This may be a problem if you tend to put your bags on the floor but for those girls I say, “Don’t ever put your nice bags on the floor!!”. You know how dirty the floor is and how stained the bottom of your bags can get?!!? EEEEK. You are not going to write home to tell all your girlfriends about this one, but for those who are looking for something affordable, stylish and functional, this has got all that. At Neiman Marcus for $438.

Kelly Lin: Beauty and the Bag

Photos courtesy of GQ TaiwanOne of the biggest names in the Hong Kong film industry, Kelly Lin (or Lam Hei Lui/Lin Hsi Lei depending on the dialect you speak), is an avid bag collector who’s earned her place in the Bag Snob Hall of Fame, she is also one of my best friends! I thought it would be fun for our readers to learn about Kelly from her best friend’s point of view so I convinced her to be our latest Snob File profile (well, I kind of just told her and as usual, she went along with me). I met Kelly 11 years ago when we both moved to Taiwan after graduating college, she from the University of California at Irvine and I from the University of Southern California. To the outside world, we seemed the most unlikely pair of people to bond, she was quiet and reserved while I was bossy and talkative. But Kelly, like most movie stars, is not as she appears. She’s going to kill me for saying this but she can be just as talkative as me and certainly as bossy! This is a girl with multiple cell phones (sometimes talking on one while text messaging on the other two)! So what is her other favorite past time? Buying bags of course! Forget fancy cocktail dresses or Chanel jackets (unless she’s working), for Kelly, it’s all about the bag! Her birkin collection is just as extensive as mine (we often trade and share bags) and she also collects everything from Jil Sander to vintage bags. Kelly’s style is casual and unpretentious, just like her personality. She was named the sexiest Asian female star in the world by FHM magazine and is revered as one of the great beauties of her time so you’d think all this would go to her head but she has not changed one bit since I’ve known her (no diva behavior from this screen goddess!) She’s still the same tomboy with no make up in her worn out converse shoes and jeans that I’ve known and loved for almost a dozen years Kelly is also the kindest and most generous person you’ll ever meet, which attributes to her success and endurance in an industry where few survive for long.Bag Snob: How many birkins do you have? I know the answer since I helped you get a couple but our readers want to know Kelly Lin: 5 birkins (white, black, blue jean, orange, chocolate)Bag Snob: Style icon?Kelly Lin: Audrey Hepburn because she’s graceful and classicBag Snob: Beauty secret for staying so youthfulKelly Lin: Keep smiling and be happy. (Bag Snob note: so it has nothing to do with the monthly 3 hour facials from Annie our skin guru?)Bag Snob: Morning routineKelly Lin: Wash my face, a big glass of warm water, then breakfast (Bag Snob note: don’t lie, the first thing you do is check your cell for voice mail/text messages, then your computer to check email and to read Bag Snob Bag Snob: Travel Essentials?Kelly Lin: Sexy lingerie, a pair of worn out converse, ipod, and a photo of my honey (Bag Snob note: Kelly’s honey is a cutie and he cooks but I’m wondering why she needs sexy lingerie when traveling with his photo?)Bag Snob: Current Favorite bagKelly Lin: My white birkinBag Snob: Best Gift Ever ReceivedKelly Lin: Set of vintage jewelry my special someone bought me for my birthday, which was picked out by Bag Snob (Bag Snob note: Oh yeah! That was a lovely set, amongst other things, I am also her personal shopper)Bag Snob: Stretch your left arm out as far as you can, what do you find?Kelly Lin: Oops, I don’t think I can tell you (Bag Snob note: Excuse me but this is a rated PG website)Bag Snob: Favorite vacation spotKelly Lin: I go to Paris once a year, it’s one of the most romantice places I’ve ever been to! (Bag Snob note: I thought my house was your favorite vacation spot? What, the suburbs aren’t romantic?)Bag Snob: Must have bag for Spring?Kelly Lin: a Chanel clutch (Bag Snob note: I just got a blue one but you can’t borrow it for at least 6 months)Bag Snob: Heels or Flats?Kelly Lin: Definitely Flats, I can’t walk in heels, unless I’m working……Bag Snob: When did you last cry?Kelly Lin: when I was watching “The Holiday” a month ago.

Kelly Lin with Kotur d’Abo clutch

Tina and I are on opposite ends of the love/hate for Ferragamo. I think I am just struck sick with love for the ankle strap platform sandals, I am completely obsessed but cannot throw down $2200 for them. And besides, it would make me a giant Amazon woman at 6’1″. But this clutch is something I can totally do and probably will. How cute and versatile is this amazing thing? It is a good size and the balloon shape makes it roomy. The frame opens wide for easy access and also keeps the integrity of the shape. Comes in an off white for summer, or get the year round chocolate at Neiman Marcus for $950. Also comes in python.

One of my very best friends, famed Asian actress Kelly Lin, carried a stunning Kotur gold snake d’Abo clutch with a red hot Versace gown to the Shanghai International Film festival this weekend. I gave her the clutch and knew it would look fabulous on her (if you must know, it was a trade– we have been trading things in our closets for about 13 years– it’s so strange that we fit into each other’s clothes even though I’m 6 inches shorter!). There is a lot of rumours about Kel’s love interest, many of you have even emailed me about it and all I have to say is she is very happy If you are a Kelly Lin fan, you must check out her award nominated performance in ‘The Sparrow’. I’m so proud of her!Kotur clutches have long been a red carpet favorite in Hollywood, I’m happy to see Kelly rocking my favorite style from the line even better than the LA girls. Check out the d’Abo here on Kotur’s website.

Nancy Gonzalez Grommet Croc Clutch on Hayden Panettiere

Hayden Panettiere wore the Nancy Gonzalez crocodile clutch with self covered grommets on MTV to promote her movie, I Love You, Beth Cooper. This clutch is not out yet (we did a Fall Preview of this clutch back in April), but Tina and I both have it, we were the first to get our greedy little hands on this most kick ass clutch Nancy Gonzalez has ever made. So much so that both of us re-ordered in other colors as soon as we got the first ones! Hayden has the purple, which as you can see is phenomenal – it is the same as the one we saw in the showroom, perhaps the exact same one, maybe she got it on loan? I got it in gunmetal gray and Tina has it in liquid black, which is a sueded crocodile with a textured metallic gold finish. This clutch does not get left alone, I almost don’t want to take it out sometimes because I am constantly being accosted! It is $1500 and should be in stores by the end of the month (I will confirm). Shop for Nancy Gonzalez at Saks Fifth Avenue.

I wonder what will happen to Alexander Wang when the 80′s are no longer ‘in’ and sloppy tees are no longer relevant. Just random thoughts… are you ready for another studded hobo? Alexander Wang does the look best and if you’re going to go for trendy, go for the best trendoid around. Don’t get me wrong, I love his sexy dresses and studded bags but where will they go next year? To my friends’ teenage daughters’ closets. Alexander Wang Hilary Large Tote $895 here.

Jennifer Aniston’s Favorite Ferragamo

Jennifer Aniston has been sporting different Ferragamo bags lately, and now she is on the set of her latest movie, Bounty Hunter with Gerard Butler, wearing the Mediterraneo Alce Satchel. Ferragamo suits her style, not fussy, trendy or edgy. She has a true classical sensibility, nothing too exciting or snazzy but she always looks sophisticated – clean and crisp (kinda like her diet, she has a great body but she works hard for it!). This satchel is a bit too conservative, almost briefcase like, but as you can see, it does slouch to give it some charm when carried. It is always fun to funk up an old fashioned piece, you get more grit from the contrast. Distressed jeans and crazy high feminine stilettos would be perfect! Great option for those who have a job that requires strict professionalism but still want some semblance of style. At Neiman Marcus for $1650.UPDATE: There is a gorgeous taupey beige at Saks Fifth Avenue. So much nicer than the black!

Leighton Meester in Bally Studded Hobo and Hudson jeans

I am very impressed with the latest Tory Burch bags. Will be totally honest and admit that I have never been a fan of her bags but the latest crop show a lot of promise! The studded tote is simple with just a touch of studded detail at the handles, great for college or for work. It does look a bit cheap for some reason but still a nice basic with a bit of sass. I like the Efram Hobo bag with studded details on the sides more than the tote, especially in luggage brown. The triple row of flat studs are a chic contrast and even the signature T logo is not obtrusive or annoying. I saw these at the Tory Burch boutique and they look even better carried on the shoulder. Check out Tory Burch Studded Tote$495 hereTory Burch Efram Hobo Bag $550 here and Tory Burch Efram Hobo Bag $550 here. What do you think? Snob or Slob?

I featured this Bally Studded Hobo ($2,484) back in June and most of you hated it. I still love it and it looks like our favorite Gossip Girl does, too. She wore hers with a pair of Hudson Amy Raw Edge Denim Shorts (was $165 now on sale for $115!) and a soft flowing blouse, a perfect contrast to the hard edge bag. It does look really heavy, though. What do you think of it now?

Alexander McQueen Houndstooth

I just don’t understand the appeal of Goyard. Seriously I’m hoping to be enlightened by some Goyard fans in the comments section! I know these bags are functional, but I don’t get their aesthetic appeal (especially given their prices). They look like something I should do my eco-conscious grocery shopping with. The detachable pouch is a useful touch I admit, but there’s something so teeny bopper about it. What do you think about Shania Twain’s Goyard ‘St Louis’ Tote? Snob or Slob?

Everyone slips up once in a while, even the great ones perched high in fashion kingdom. But when they fall, they fall even harder than others. I love my Alexander McQueen houndstooth fitted jacket, it looks almost exactly like this bag. Which makes me think this is one of the sample jackets spruced up with a bit of patent leather trim. The entire bag is puzzling, what’s with the cone shaped bra like bottoms? A tribute to Madonna? Some people like the idea of wooly fabric bags, but the contrasting pattern is dizzy and distracting not to mention EXPENSIVE– $2,000 for left over scraps of fabric!?!? A major thumbs down in snob world. Check out Alexander McQueen Houndstooth Tote here.

Frugal Snob: Burberry Drawstring Tote

I don’t talk much about Burberry bags but I have to admit, they seem to improve each time I walk by the store because they are doing less of the tartan canvas. They are now doing the tartan laser cut into leather which is more subtle but still annoying. This drawstring tote however, has none of that and has a small Burberry horse logo on the bottom. And the slouchy casual feel is a nice change from the serious stiff collar image the brand has. I am not big on drawstring but it works on a tote where it does not close completely but just bunches up. The leather is really amazing for the price, this is a fantastic buy! At Saks Fifth Avenue for $550.

Marni Canvas Balloon with Kim Gordon Print

As a part the Summer Edition 2009 capsule collection, Sonic Youth singer Kim Gordon collaborated with Marni to create bags and tee-shirt with her abstract prints, like the one on this canvas balloon bag. Is it abstract? Looks like a puppy to me. I know she is a famous singer but is she a designer too? I guess any artist can delve into any medium these days and they do. I don’t know how I feel about this, I just can’t take the pushing of the envelope on things that are good just the way they are. Oh no, that was total old people thinking. But let me get to some points that do not reflect my age or personal digressions. It is canvas and is unlined but is still $1000, sure it is much less than the leather balloon in the same size for $1800 but still I don’t want to throw away bag. White canvas, think about it. It will get so gross that the abstract print will blend in with all the dirt. Good or bad, you decide. At Marni boutiques and Marni online.

Is it me or is Lanvin losing its edge? I just can’t seem to get excited about the bags anymore. I love Alber Elbaz and the ready to wear is still to die but the bags… not feeling it. I mean there is nothing really wrong with this quilted bag but there is nothing great about it either. I long for the days of whimsy from Elbaz, not days of safe marketing for consumption. What about you? Lanvin Quilted Leather bag for $2033.

YSL Perforated Leather Tote

It’s hard to find a sporty bag that is also stylish but YSL hit the balance perfectly with its new perforated leather tote. Never thought I’d be a fan of perforated leather but it makes this elongated doctor style bag so much more modern and interesting (not to mention very youthful and athletic). The number one complaint from women about elongated totes is that it’s hard to dig up things from the bottom of the bag (drives me nuts when I miss a call after frantically looking for my phone!). I’ve always said this is a problem easily solved with a larger opening which is exactly what YSL did– the zipper opening spans from middle of the bag on each side so you an actually see inside your bag. YSL Perforated Tote at Saks here $1,495

We were starting to get sick of studs until we saw this Be & D Studded Horizontal Satchel ($1390) on Taylor Momsen. She just turned 16 but has a very street wise and edgy style. There is just something very appealing about her– the over processed and bleached hair, micro minis and a trashy chic style makes her akin to Blondie for the new generation. The bag is total overkill with the large studs on the straps and I would have liked it better to only have the smaller studs but on Taylor, it works. And surprisingly, it’s a lot lighter than it looks. So if you’re still seeking an attention grabbing studded number, this is the one. Be & D Studded Horizontal Satchel at Nordstrom.

Sang A Mezzo Convertible Tote/Clutch- 30% off

UPDATE: Sang A just sent me this coupon for our readers! She’s having a private pre-sale at 30% off starting Monday (but if you call Joseph I bet he’ll do it for you now!) Code to purchase online is PRESALE09.I’ve decided I am all about convertible bags for traveling from now on. Ms. High Maintenance with 4 suitcases @ 200 lbs this last trip to Asia pissed off everyone who had to load and unload them (best friend’s hubby, brother, cousin, housekeepers, etc). So for my next trip, I’m downsizing (by at least half, hey it’s an improvement!).Am contemplating this ingenius MEZZO Folding Shopper tote in black natural gloss python from our friend Sang A– it’s large enough by day for my small laptop and folded in half, it’s the perfect oversized clutch! Sang A is really in tune with what modern women juggling multiple roles as wife/mother/career girl need cuz she is one herself. Her bags are never fussy– chicness and simplicity rule, as do functionality. It comes in multiple colors and skins but I prefer the black/white combos– very sophisticated and will be easy to use while traveling. 12.5″ x 9″ (folded is 6.25″x9″)– $2,500.00 for the BLACK NATURAL GLOSS PYTHON Here. And $1,800 for the COOL WHITE VINTAGE PATENT LEATHER version.

Serena van der Woodsen in Mulberry’s Bayswater Suede Bag

TGIF! I’ve had the longest and most confusing week trying to recuperate from my overseas trip. There was a lot of cooking at my house (by me) to appease a sulking boy (not the 5 year old) for my absence. I’m looking forward to a weekend of fun with friends (4 birthday parties!) and thought i should feature a fun clutch in case you’re in the mood for something different. This Blue Gioia Feather Clutch is like a piece of art, made of pearlized lamb suede– it has a grille inspired by a traditional Japanese screen crafted from 18K gold-plated brass set over bright blue peacock feathers. Fabulous? With a capital F! Has detachable chain, flap closure and is 8″× 4 ?”. Made by by Raven Kauffman for $1,395.00 (not bad for such a unique accessory!) Have a lovely weekend, everyone!

I’m a little upset with Gossip Girl at the moment; not only have the story lines gotten increasingly unrealistic (and this is coming from someone who grew-up going to an Upper East Side private school and graduated from college just a few years ago), but Blake Lively’s character Serena keeps wearing the most RIDICULOUS outfits! Slutty cocktail dresses in the middle of the day!? No. Just NO. Given this you can imagine my surprise when, in character, Lively was photographed on set in the above outfit sporting the Mulberry Bayswater suede bag ($995). Versatile, age-appropriate, and well-priced, my only beef with the bag is the crocodile-stamped suede which I think cheapens it a bit. What do you think about Serena’s Mulberry? Snob or Slob?

Khirma Eliazov Oversized Cha-Cha

Either I’m getting old or Judith Leiber bags are getting hip. I find myself gravitating to the line of sparkling beaded bags lately. Yes, I still abhor the stupid animal and cupcake shaped clutches but am in love with this architecturally inspired Sunburst clutch. The art deco influenced design reminds me of one of my favorite books, Atlas Shrugged. If you stare at it long enough you will find the pattern becomes 3 dimensional. Or maybe it’s just that I need glasses. Judith Leiber Sunburst crystal-embellished clutch ($2295– still very expensive, will need to ask about that when I meet the 85 year old iconic designer next month!)

Tina says that we are getting boring with all the same blah blah blah. Yes, too much of a good thing does get stale even if it is Chanel, Hermes, Bottega Veneta. I am always interested in smaller designers because they go out on a limb and sometimes comes up with a big wow. This giant tote with stingray detail on the front is amazingly bold and fantastic. How great is this seemingly simple feature? If you’re the type that won’t buy anything unless you are sure to not only turn heads but whip them around, pound for pound this is a bargain (another bonus for buying small designers), an exotic look with the stingray for only $1395. Wow, right? At Khirma Eliazov (no idea how to say that).

I felt this bag was appropriate for the week since it appears Alexander Wang was inspired by Native American suede pouches when he designed the Diego bucket bag. Granted, there are a few more studs than the Natives preferred but can’t you just picture Chief Powhatan with this? It’s not entirely tragic, just a bit boring from what I’d come to expect from the bad boy designer. I am also not a bucket bag girl, things get lost in its deep abyss and it’s awkward to carry on the shoulder or arm. The bucket tote silhouette was originally invented by LV (the Noe bag) to hold 4 bottles of champagne– now if Alexander Wang will throw in 4 bottles of Cristal Rose in there, I might reconsider this. Emmy Rossum Carlos Falchi Ashley Python

Carlos Falchi is making quite the comeback and I’m so happy for him! I went to a personal appearance he did at Bergdorf Goodman a few months ago and chatted with him for a bit and he seemed so genuinely passionate about his work…pretty impressive when you’ve been in the business for as many decades as he has. Just a month or two after his personal appearance I met the designer again at the Target showroom for a preview they did for his collection and he actually remembered me (or at least did a good job pretending!). Needless to say I’ve been keeping an extra close eye on his work since getting some details on the intricate craftsmanship and carefully picked skins that go into his bags. I’m not a fan of the satchel-shape for the most part (always makes me think of school girls!), but the python skin on Emmy Rossum’s makes up for it. Falchi is definitely hit or miss for me. A number of his pieces are wildly tacky and too colorful for my taste, but he hit the mark with this one (Carlos Falchi Ashley Python Satchel, $2,560. Available at Bergdorf Goodman). It’s simple, versatile, easy-to-wear, and definitely something that will hold its own for many years.Have you picked-up any of Carlos Falchi’s designs this year?

Facebook Giveaway from Katherine Kwei: Joyce Bag $625

I saw this clutch at the Milan Prada store and was in love. But afterwards, I thought I was attributing my sentimental notions of being at the original Prada store to everything I saw there. But I saw this bag again was again drawn to it. Could it really be nostalgia? Or maybe it really is a fabulous clutch with elements of old Prada, like the shape, combined with Miuccia’s new love of embellishments, the crystal clasp. But here, it is done right – not too much and the perfect accent to create an evening look. I love the oversized “diamonds” reminding me of Ring Pops. The whimsy is subtle but definitely adds an air of youthfulness. The effect of the painted leather is really beautiful in person, it is irregular and looks rubbed off like you would find in a vintage piece. At Barneys New York for $1295.

Frugal Snob: SEQUOIA PARIS celebrates 20 years with Pierre Hardy

Sequoia Paris celebrates 20 years of chic with the “Twenty” bag ($495) designed by Pierre Hardy. It is difficult to find well made and well designed bags under $500– especially from a talent like Pierre Hardy! I’ve seen the bags; the leather is incredible as is the workmanship. Tight seams and immaculate stitching make the bags look like they cost double the price. The collection has multiple colors but I love the neutral shade above– nude is the color of the season and a nude bag is way more practical than, say, a nude sheer dress.

ChloƩ Abby Framed Shoulder Bag

Yes, perforated leather accessories are very on trend right now but Azzedine Alaia has been doing it for decades! I’m a huge Alaia fan and have always said that one can live on nothing but a few Alaia dresses and always look chic and current but now one must also add the Alaia leather tote to one’s life. I liked it in black but this gorgeous tan version really show off the leather work and intricate details. Talk about the ultimate snobby summer tote! I know many of you will protest about the lack of functionality of a bag full of holes but think of it this way, you’ll be able to spot your phone and keys in a second with this baby! ALA?A Perforated Leather Oversized Tote for $2,385

I feel cool just looking at this bag. It has a vagabond look but incredibly chic at the same time. It’s very Sienna Miller, no offense intended in comparing her to a hobo but she cleans up well. That removable pocket is insane, such a good idea! I always wish I can just grab my essentials and run out of the car for a quick errand but I end up kind of juggling everything and then feeling dumb for not just taking the whole bag. I love the contrasting suede of the pocket, it adds another layer of dimension and texture. It is called a frame bag but it technically isn’t, it is a doctor’s bag with the metal trim around the opening’s edge to make it look like a frame, which makes it easier to open so I’m fine with that. This bag will become a part of you as you get comfortable with it and throw it around – it’ll look even better all beat up! At Saks Fifth Avenue for $1985.

Maison Martin Margiela Large Canvas Holdall

I am packing and getting ready for my trip to Savannah for the Savannah College of Arts and Design Fashion Show with Andre Leon Talley presenting his namesake Lifetime Achievement Award honoring Diane von Furstenberg. I am really excited about the trip and meeting all the designers who will be. This last week I started shopping for a new carry on, I’m looking forward to flying without tots, which means I’ll have time to read, watch movies and enjoy the flight. As I started looking at bag options this Margiela was a top candidate until I realized how HUMONGOUS it is. I will need to buy a seat just for this bag! Holy, what the heck? How could you possibly carry this around? Even empty, which presumably the bag this model is holding is, looks ridiculously cumbersome. I would have no problems filling it, the issue would be the wheelbarrow I need to accompany it!! I guess, no new bag for me this trip. You will be getting frequent Facebook updates on Bag Snob’s Fanpage, so make sure you’re a fan! Maison Martin Margiela Large Canvas Holdall at Net-a-Porter for $745.
